Hello,

I've only ever used AMD chips before for some years but got my first intel quad as multiple cores seem to be the way to go.

I have this set of hardware

a q6600 GO stepping
an Abit IP35 motherboard
ocz pc 8500 dual channel memory
and a very good if not huge tuniq tower 120 cooler

the rest of the hardware is just basic nothing special

ok now the problem

I of course before clocking this set up read all through the sections that appeared to have some connection with my set up

and seeing as everybody seemed to be getting an average of 3.4 gig and some a lot higher I decided to go for 3 gig first 9x333 MHZ :)

unfortunatly it wouldnt even start just kept spinning the fan for 5 seconds and shutting down over and over :(

then discovered that cpuz was saying my spd memory had a max of pc5300
strange seeing as it is rated at PC8500 = 1066 meg

but i read on cpuz that on the epp #1 timings table that 533 MHZ needed 2.3 volts so back I went uped the voltage and hay presto she worked

So flushed with success I tested for a bit everything looked fine :)

so then went for 3.2 gig had to add a teenie bit to the voltage but its been up and running on full load now for 24 hours at 55 degrees :)

unfortunately heres the fly in the ointment

the bios is saying my core speed is 3.2 gig whish consists of 8x400 MHZ settings which show up fine in cpuz

but windows, sisoft sandra and pc pitstop online benchmarking all say i'm running a core speed of 3.6

so my question is whats correct ? I looked into the sisoft sandra results and it says the chipset is running at 450 MHZ which with a multi of 8 would give you 3.6 gig
so is the other benchmarking tools and windows picking up the chipset speed and reporting it as the cpu frequancy in error ?

I need to know as i cant really overclock anything until it tells me correctly whats going on

plus as a quick sidenote the dram frequancy on cpuz is reading 500 MHZ at a FSB : DRAM of 4:5 is that ok ?

I think I've supplied all the info i can think of if any more is need please let me know

thank you in advance

Ian

Hi,

Thank you for your help I was not too confident in the CPUZ software as it decided to give a reading of 6x216 for some reason when I put 9x333 in the bios

so as long as CPUZ is the standard and agrees with what I entered in the bios then I should just go with that :D

I was wondering what sort of core voltage were you using to hit 3.6 gig ?

I take it seeing as I'm using OCZ PC8500 dual channel memory I shouldnt really run into memory speed problems ?

thanks again

Ian
