A seemingly difficult PayPal question . . .

I have been trying to find out how much it costs to use PayPal to purchase on-line. It seems to be a tricky question since every time I ask, I am told that "It costs nothing to open a PayPal account". Opening an account isn't exactly the same as using it. There are also mentions of "topping up" your PayPal account. I'm sure that the answer is somewhere on their web-site but I can't find it.

Can someone who uses PayPal kindly tell me whether there are any charges for using it to purchase on-line.

Thanks very much :)

Yes, they take a percentage of any money sent. If you send £30, it'll cost you £30 but the seller will only receive about £28

You don't get charged for buying things with Paypal

This. You don't have to pay any more to buy. The seller might have slightly higher prices to offset the fee that paypal take, but there are no "hidden charges" on top. If you're selling, however, paypal do take a cut of the money, so you need to be aware of that (not sure what percent it is though).

Thank you, I suspected that was the case.

Thank you too, the recipient of my money gets charged then.

If only PayPal could provide such clear answers ;)

When you sign up to Paypal, they will take two small amounts of money (less than £1 each) from your assigned bank account. You then have to wait until they appear on your personal statement, then once you have the 2 mystery figures, Paypal will ask you to enter these 2 figures in. These amounts will then be reimbursed and your Paypal account goes live. They do this for security. I don't know if this has changed since I signed up, but that was what I had to do when I opened an account in 2001.

This isn't compulsary, only if you want to verify a bank account to prevent funds being delayed further down the line. (as far as I know)

IIRC they make two small deposits in your account, not the other way round...?

This...they do not take money from your account...rather for bank account verification purposes they make 2 small deposits ie less than £1 but usually less than 20p.

This morning i sent some money over to my brother in Canada as i asked him to get some stuff thats cheaper there than over here. I sent the money as a gift but had to pay the fees which was around £3...stupid if you ask me that paypal want in on the action if your sending money to someone as a gift etc...theres no way to get around that as far as i could see. But still cheaper than paying nearly £30 in fees if i done it through my bank.

I think you get the gift fees if you're using bank funded cash, if you send it from your paypal balance then it's free.

you get charged to use send money if you use cards, bank funded is free as is sending balance.

Signing up for any account is free - taking a payment costs however, usually 3.4% + 20p (unless your doing silly volumes)
