I'm away to splash some cash, and am looking at a dual-core AM2 setup, but if there is any sensible reasons for going Conroe, I'd like to hear them. I don't want the usual single-line answers :p Not interested without some facts and figures...

I'll be buying a new CPU, mobo and RAM (2GB of DDR2). Any better AM2 mobos than Asus? (which I'm more than happy with) I'm currently using an XP3700+ and an A8N-SLi Premium.

I'm ordering Friday morning :)

At roughly the same cost the e6400 vs 4400x2 you will get around 10-15% better performace with the conroe

There are tons of links for the facts and figures u wanting, above is just a summary.

Read any single review - Conroe outperforms AMD on the whole.

...and once you overclock any of these new Core 2 Duo's - Not even the AMD FX series is close ;)

First link I came to, which is Anandtech, I've given you the link from the start of the actual comparisons and the 6400 beats all the X2 chips up to and including the X2 5000 in, I think, every test and that is before overclocking. Other links and comparisons shouldn't be hard to find either if you want to look.

Sure, both can be overclocked but when you are starting from such an advantage with a Conroe it makes sense from a price/performance viewpoint.

It is rather unfortunate that you will be ordering Friday morning as you will have missed the Geil PC6400 on This Week Only for £149.99+Vat which is a pretty decent price considering how well it performs.

Ahhh. Looks like my luck is in!

This weeks special offer, an E6600 bundle :)

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-108-CS)
Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-152-AS)
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN)

At under £560 quid :)

Conroe is definitely better... so many reviews have shown that it outperforms AMD X2 easily...

AMD make good processors, but the Conroe is just better value for money at the moment, using lower power (with the exception of the few Energy Efficient AMD models) to achieve greater performance.

Even if your not overclocking, at virtually every price point the Conroe leads. I've got a E6700 at stock 2.67Ghz, and it easily out performs the AMD FX62. (Incase anyone thinks E6700@Stock is a waste, its at least twice as fast as my previous 3.2Ghz P4, and by running at stock now, by the time it starts to feel slow, I'll still have the option to clock it up later)

Fact is you said yourself, you wanted AM2, which means just like a Conroe system, you need motherboard, ram, cpu the works. So imho there is no reason why not to go for Conroe.

Whichever you choose, Im sure you'll enjoy it anyway. Its not like either are 'bad'
