A Shuttle as a File Server

Hi all
Been out of touch with PC hardware for years now just want to know your thoughts on the following

Currently running an old PC as a media server mainly as well as web hosting and downloading box with transcoding videos on the fly with air video - got it running nicely with no issues,

Problem is its in a full tower and its taking up a bit too much room and the other half wants the box room spruced up

Now its an old atx board with a 3200+ althlon (yeh its old lol) not high spec at all - its pretty much on 24hrs

What im thinking about is replacing this with a shuttle pc to act as a server instead - is this stupid - are they not meant to be on 24hrs etc I have no clue

Was maybe thinking of putting in a
Intel Pentium Dual Core with 2gb Ram - should be plenty

Also not sure what their power consumption is - but will google that again

The other option was to get a qnap or synology nas - but they dont seem as versatile to me and they are pretty expensive (£250 -300)

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Oh the other final option is to perhaps get a smaller case and just transfer the lot into that

Shuttle 'xpc' chassis are fine for 24/7 usage.

There's limited room inside for cooling, but for the size 'equipment' that goes inside and the fact they supply a half-decent heat pipe cooler with it (or did with mine), it was fine for years. Graphics card room is scarce but for a file server that won't matter.

The other typical limitation with a Shuttle is the power supplies are typically quite low output, but again more of an issue for use as a primary desktop as it limits your graphics choices further, and a bit of a non-issue for a file server.

IMO, generally not problems at all for the purposes they're intended, whether used for a short or continuous duration. I had mine from around end of 2003 to mid/late 2007 as a primary system with plenty of usage and left on around the clock. Then until about 1 year ago it was still on 24/7 and generally connected to an idle MMO character all day (gossip leeching) as a secondary PC, even if I didn't directly use it for day-to-day stuff.

or you can buy a micro atx/itc case and board? As soon as I get the £150 spare im going to move my second PC/media centre (Q6600, 4GB RAM, GTX 470, MSI G41M) over to a Silverstone SG01B I think, as its currently sitting in a Thermaltake Kandalf lmao.
