Hi all,

following on from an older thread of mine, my friend needs to upgrade from the onboard graphics which came with his new PC he bought.

He is limited to a 220watt PSU in an Acer machine, and also the card needs to be low profile.

Ive had a good google but there are so many conflicting oppinnions on which cards will run on a 220w PSU and which wont.

Has anybody had any similar experiences?

Thanks in advance :)

I would probably look at getting a GT220 DDR3 or GDDR3 low profile card but they tend to be over £60.

The other alternatives are a low profile 9500GT DDR3 which is slower than the DDR3 or GDDR3 versions of the GT220 and the low profile version of the HD4650 GDDR2 which is around the same performance but is much cheaper.

This comparison of the HD4650 and 9500GT is useful to read:

The GT220 in theory should offer lower power consumption than either a 9500GT or HD4650 as it is a 40NM GPU and the others are 55NM.

Cat - i looked at those but read that it would overload the PSU.

Chipps - sounds promising but again would it run off a 220w PSU who knows,

His PC is already running 1 x TB HDD and a QuadCore processor

i dont think there will be anything else modern that will draw less power under load, so if that won't run of it i dont' know what will.

It seems like it ATM:

For light gaming at 1280X800 or a bit higher the card seems OK:

The best low profile card out there is a Sparkle 9800GT.
- apparently draws about 105W

Mind you, when it says "low profile" the heatsink on the 9800GT takes up two slots so it's low but fat :/

The best low profile card with low power consumption is the GT220 DDR3
-Nvidias numbers say up to 58W power consumption

I've just finished packing my tiny itx case which runs on a 220W PSU and my weapon of choice was the Asus GT220 1GB DDR3. I agree it's expensive for what it is.

I installed a 7900gs (a free hand-down) in a pre-built PC which I think has a 280w PSU. It worked fine and required 1x connector from the PSU which I had to split from the DVD drive. about 12-18 months later the card blew down to heat issues, it used to idle at 85c and god knows what in games. The fan would ramp right up when the windows screen saver kicked in. I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with the PSU. Anyway, I replaced it with a GT 240. This card requires no connector from the PSU and again, it works fine. I'm actually surprised at how good a card it is on modern games. Have a look at some reviews on it. I almost got a 4650 but I saw plenty of benchmarks that shows that the GT 240 is about 2.5x as fast in most games.

EDIT: Oh bugger, I typed all that and then saw the low-profile bit. Not sure if there is a low profile version but I'll leave the post in case it's some use to someone.

Not looking good enough :/

I'm getting scores of 7000 in 3DMark06 with the GT220 - doesn't look like the 5570 will be any significant distance from that.
