currently with sky adsl on unlimited broadband. cant fault them really minimal downtime etc however my router has stopped working today...... rang sky who after conducting a few tests concluded it was dead want me to pay £40 for a replacement.

my choices are stump up the sky fees

leave sky for another supplier and get a free router (customer service rep basically told me goodbye when I told her I was considering this)

or purchase a router myself

what would you do?

Provided you are connecting by username and password, rather than the other method, the name of which eludes me at the moment, you can hook up pretty much any ADSL modem/router. You can pick one up for next to nothing, or nothing if you look on freecycle.

You may need to extract the username and password from your existing router though, or create one as sky won't give them out.

If you have already played the "OK then, I'll give my notice and cancel if you don't give me a free router" card and they have stood firm then I don't think you have much choice other than to cough up the £40!

Although, did you actually get through to the cancellation/retention department or were you just told no by the bod in the regular department?

I went through something similar recently where my router wasn't working properly and the customer services department said no but the cancellations department said OK to a free router straight away! :p
I think it helped though that I pay £60-odd a month between TV subscription, internet and phone - if you only have broadband with them they won't care so much that you might leave!

Other than this you can follow Tealc's advice and migrate to another router but the saga you have to go through to get your Sky username and password is ridiculous - Sky can't (or won't) give it to you as technically it's against their T&C's to use a third party router!

I'm having issues with my router atm too.
Gets very hot and when any form of DL is chucked thru it, completely fails to route anything. Spoke to sky who were adamant I had to pay, asked if I could use 3rd party router, yes sir thats fine, whats the setting I need? Sorry sir can't tell you.

since been looking for a billion 7800N but cant find a reasonably priced one :(
Might call sky again and speak to cancellations.

didnt speak to the disconnection/retention team just the women in the BB department. maybe I should ring and threaten to take my BB phone and TV custom eleswhere. if they call my bluff i can always go through with it and sign back up to them next month with some quidco cashback?!

Invariably you won't need to actually go through with the cancellation - you have to give 30 days notice to cancel anyway so if they do call your bluff you can always call up a few days before the cancellation cut off date and tell them you have changed your mind!

Think it has to be a minimum period between cancellation and activation, maybe 30 days? The other option of course is to just stick it in someone elses name.

this.

slap your sky router model into google with 'extract username and password' and you'll see loads of sites explaining/providing tools to do this.

takes 5 minutes worth of reading.

much cheaper than £40 for a crappy one any day!

That's what I was thinking. It's just a paper weight now. Will ring to "cancel" on sunday when I'm home and see what they say. If I don't get any luck I'll try and get my username & password out of them.

spoke to sky disconnections team today and told them to terminate everything (tv, phone and BB). explained why and the gent offered to send a newer model modem free of charge. tried to get a deal on sports channels also but the best he could offer me was a free 2nd hd sky plus box and a free multi room subscription for a year. no need for me tho as I use my 360 upstaits so long as the BB is working!

I got what I needed out of it and he probably got a stat towards his target so happy all around!

Spoke to Sky last night, went thru some troublehshooting with a guy from ireland.
Brand New N wireless router will be here before Saturday :)
