A strange problem when using my PS3.

I have a strange problem when using my PS3 and I can't quite put my finger on where the problem is coming from. I have my PS3 connected via a HDMI cable into a Sony LCD-TV and for 99% of the time I have no problems with it.

Yet about once every couple of days the picture on my TV goes blank and I get a picture that looks like the screen you see when you switch to a channel which isn't tuned in. (The black and white dots flicking across the screen.)

This problem lasts for a couple of seconds and then returns to the normal picture again. Seeing as the problem is so minor and infrequent I haven't really been too bothered to sort it out but I thought I would post here mainly to cure my curiosity.

I don't think its any thing to do with the power as my PS3 has never crashed and a lapse of power would surely turn off or reset the machine. My first thought would be that the HDMI cable could be faulty but I am not too sure, as I say it only happens for about 2 seconds once every day or two.

Its also worth pointing out that I use the LCD-TV for PS2 (Component) and PC (VGA) and have never seen this problem with either of these connections.

Any ideas?

Try using the PS2 component cable with the PS3 (its still HD) and see if the problem is still there. Could be some issue with the HDMI handshaking.

I recently got a ps3 and had the same problem but after re setting my ps3 up it seems ok not sure what the cause was but I did notice switching inputs on the monitor (vga/hdmi) would sort it out .

One thing I did notice tho is that it only seemed to happen on cold boot

I have also had a similar problem, at first switching the TV or PS3 off/on would fix it but it got to the point where the picture would flicker then go completely blank after about five minutes of use (audio and controls still worked). I replaced the hdmi cable (with a cheaper one  ) and it has been fine ever since.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I will switch to my component cable and then if that sorts it out I will look into getting a new HDMI cable, I did have a feeling it would be something to do with the cable so switching over should confirm it.

Thanks. :)

I had a similar problem with my PS3 and Samsung LCD, where after about 10 minutes, the TV would switch back to the Scart 1 input. I traced this down to the my NTL cable box - it must transmit some sort of signal over Scart after powering down, causing an auto input switch to Scart.

Just over the past few days I have been using the PS3 with my parents' Sony LCD, and I had one occurrence were the screen went totally black (but sound still playing through amp, and controller inputs still working?!). I had to power down both PS3 and TV to get things going again - very strange and hasn't happened since!

Cheers,

Suman
