A Submariner's cap badge

Today I got home to find a small package in my room, and it's a royal navy cap badge. The thing is, it's from a relative clearing out my great uncle's house, and said great uncle served on a destroyer in WWII, but the cap badge is the Submarine Service's dolphins. Any idea of how he might have come to have it?

Maybe he just did a stint on a sub as well, my Dad served on the Ark Royal but was also on a submarine for a while.

He was a sub mariner and didn't tell you? He bought it in a shop? He stole it?

You can get hold of your Great Uncles war records from the Imperial War Museum I *think*. Certainly get them from somewhere for a small fee.
