Hi all!

I am building a new system for myself, and mainly for gaming.
Will be shopping end of august, start of september, and so will have time to make a great build :)
Want to be ready for Mafia 2 :D

Most importat thing is the budget, and its capped at 1000£ (+/-few quid is ok)

As i have always had intel (last one was Q8400) so i really dont know witch way to go, with AMD or Intel.

As now, am thinking of AMD, and build a system like this:

*AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
= 123.36£
*Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
= 74.99£
*XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 "AVP Edition" 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
= 224.99£
*Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)
= 82.24£
*Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK)
= 59.98£
*Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500418AS)
= 35.24£
*Samsung SH-D163C/BEBE 16 x DVD-ROM SATA (Black) - OEM
= 10.99£
*Cooler Master Hyper TX3 CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM3/775/1156)
= 15.99£
*Coolermaster Elite 430 Case - Black
= 44.99£
*BenQ G2420HDBL 24" Widescreen LED Monitor - Black
= 162.14£
*Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - Retail (Full Version)(GFC-00025)
= 92.99£
*Blaze M1178 Tomahawk 1600DPI Laser Wireless Gaming Mouse - Black/Blue
= 19.99£
*Emprex Slim Desktop Low Profile Keyboard - Black (6310U)
= 9.99£

Total: 957.87£

Or would be better to go with 2x5770 ? ...
Last two cards i had were ATI 4870 and 4850, so nvidia is unknown territory for me,,, long time ago had fx5200 :D

And yes, will be doing some overclocking aswell ;)

Would it be a great bang for a buck , or should change something? (Or could get a stronger Intel system for budget?).

Will look for different cases , but at the moment this is quite good.

Thanks for any help and suggestions provided ;)
And a good night to ya all gamers!

Your current system with the Q8400 and HD 4870 doesn't sound that bad tbh, what's the full spec, motherboard and PSU? You might be able to resuse some bits or do a cheap upgrade that'll keep you going until the next generation of CPUs comes along soon.

Yes, was quite good rig but had to sell, so at the moment have no bits left. but cash :) So want to get a really sweet rig for myself.

The keyboard will be changed anyway, i put it here to get a glimpse what the whole thing will cost about.
Will check the mb, thanks ;)

Friend works at assembling pc-s, and told me to get the GTX 470 instead of 5850.
Looking at reviews its slightly better than 5850, so what you ppl think of it?

I was thinking to go with this:
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 470 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
= 246.74£

Reading guru3d review convinced me totally :) So yes, going for the GTX 470.

What about AMD X6, how is it compared to the X4 ? (If you look the 1090T BE, at 3.2Ghz same as X4 955), but priced higher. is it worth it or not?)

And the 1055T is only 25£ more than X4 955, would that be the right way to go?

That build seems really solid so far.

Go with the 470 as said before.

This does 8x/8x Crossifre for not much more money.

Get this for the extra £5, well worth it.

Considering that you have quite a small case, a modular PSU might be a good idea, would push the budget up though if you wish to stick with Corsair, if not then this is the same price, or this will allow more overhead if you want to go SLI in the future.

Also not much point in going with the 6 core right now, 4 is plenty for games right now.

Thanks for replying, and yes will go with logitech mouse.
About the case, will think about it and maybe will go with some other type.
Will take the psu suggsestions in count.

Can anyone tell me, will i be abel to run SLI with this board?
Asus M4A79XTD Evo (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard?

Asking since none of these boards have SLI offering...

I don't think there is a single AM3 board which supports SLI, so you can go a Single nVidia card, or Single/Crossfire Ati card(s) :)

+ Personally, go GTX470 :)

Ive got the TX3 and it struggles to cool my Q8200 Quad decently, idles at 50odd degrees at stock 2.33ghz in Mid Tower with intake and exhaust fans and the fan on heatsink is really loud and whiney, id recommend spending a little bit more to get better cooler.

Thanks, okay, ill go with single gtx 470 and oc it if needed.

Witch AM3 motherboard is best for oc? As will stay with X4 955 and oc it :D

About the cooler, what you recommend? and please recommend some good case aswell, that has good air cooling possibilitys.

The Coolermaster Hyper 212 isnt a bad cooler for the price but its out of stock atm.

I think the bare minimum cooler is the Titan Fenrir but its £32.

I'll buy you a soda if you get this:

I have been thinking and would now like to know what you think of it, what if i would take my buget around 1,100-1,200£ and get an Intel I7 system? Afterall, spending 10-20% more to system and getting a significally better would be worth it?

Would it be more "future proof" ?
And when compared to AMD PII X2 955, how much is it faster/better?

Like this config:
1) Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
2) Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
3) Kingston HyperX 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (KHX1600C9D3K3/6GX)

Or would be I5 the way to go? ...

Depends on the primary usage tbh.

It's not bad at all though.

Bear in mind it's X4 955 and i7 920, half of the benches are "Lower is better" and not all are reliable for you (depending on your needs that is). Core i7 920 with good cooling will overclock from default 2.8GHz to 4-4.2GHz too. Phenom II X4 will end up being at 3.8GHz most of the time.
