Building a PC for friend who wants a dual-core option. The PC will be mainly used for gaming, video editing and shrinking DVD's etc.

He has picked his memory and mobo dpending on the CPU he gets.

Says he has about £100 to spend on a CPU but definately not much more than that.

Recommendations anyone?

What platform are we talking, AMD/Intel, Socket 754/939/AM2, 478/775?

I'm guessing 939/AM2/775 but still :)

He has picked either s939 or s775.

Limited I know but I'm not really up to speed on the dual core CPU's so I cant personally recommend one.

His total budget is about £250.

129 will get him a conroe,

If he overclocks he will be amazed at dvd shrink encoding times

Done quickly, but it's roughly right, probably find bits cheaper elsewhere.

CP-135-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN) £109.95
MB-003-AK Asrock ConroeXFire-eSATA2 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-003-AK) £53.95
MY-057-GL GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX21GB6400UDC) (MY-057-GL) £59.95
Subtotal £223.85
VAT £39.18
Total £263.03

It's hard to get out of the Athlon64 way of thinking. Was going to say 3800 X2 no question but that cheap Conroe obviously spanks it. :p

Just a note to the above recommendation I gave, there's no CPU cooler so you may aswell get a retail one, then you also get 3 years of warranty instead of 1.
