it depends really with what you do on your pc, people who do a lot of encoding will prefer the top end cpu rather than top end graphics, and people who do a lot of gaming, depending on the game might need top end cpu but not need the top end graphics.
 
Thats only because CPU's are able to cope with todays games whereas Gfx cards unless they are high end cannot just the whole GFX limited thing
Nvidia make me laugh, they release the same thing over and over for two years then say that CPU's are dull and we should all be buying high end graphics. maybe if they got off they're backsides we wouldn't need high end graphics sigh
 
Yes its true.

Most games are about the GPU, so you can use a "normal" CPU and a "Better" GPU.

Then again some games are about the CPU and GPU and need both to be in that "Good" range.

It would not be very good if you had a "flagship" CPU and a "low end" GPU.

@ Nickolai, what are you talking about ?, you think Nvidia can suddenly make a £50 low end GPU run the best new games at 1920's ?.

If so dream on, if you want the high res+eye candy, you pay the premium or do without.

He meant if nvidia actually release a REAL next gen card then the 8 series prices would plummet and he could play todays games for little £

The REAL next gen cards would have cheaper variants also able to play todays top games!

Instead we have rehashes of the same old tech staying highend


EDIT: An example would be my brother picking up a 7900gto (basically a gtx) for £70 well over a year ago when the 8 series was released ;) He still has that card and it is still playing most games bar crysis on decent settings (if the 8 series was just the 7 series again no one would let their card go for that much and pay £400 for a new card getting little gains!)

I read it exactly the way I read it, no next gen low end suddenly games better than prevoius gen high end.

Thats what some peeps want, something for next to nothing, ie killer card for £50.

Why do Nvidia need a super duper next gen right now (today), there is no real competition and bar 1 buggy game it can Max all games at 1920's.

You want to play games at highest res+settings you buy a high end card, there is no real excuse now as the current GT/GTS are far cheaper than cards ever were for high end gaming (probably due to them being refreshes).

Blame ATI for Nvidia not having to bother releasing their next gen that they probably have ready same as any company (in a safe somewhere with blueprints for next gen after that).

Really you need a decent CPU to go with a decent GPU. Using a P4 2.8Ghz cpu with a 9800GX2 will make games run worse than someone with a C2D 2.8ghz cpu with an 8800GTS. A crap CPU will bottleneck a good GPU.
 
Wont matter if the games F.E.A.R or any other GPU based game.

This is obv within limits, you dont want a 1.2GHZ CPU with a 8800GTX playing F.E.A.R but a CD2 at 2.2GHZ over one at 3.2GHZ wont do much in them games.

More and more new games are about both CPU and GPU so correct to post #7.
 
source engine benefits from a good CPU more than a good GPU

though the statement is true to some effect its only true in certain scenarios, you could say it the other way around and it would be the same thing.......meh
 
It depends what you play?

If you play 3DMark06 on the hardest settings then it will run rubbish as you will be highly CPU restricted, but if you play REAL games, then a GPU is more important.
 
Well it's somewhat illogical to claim that since a hi-end video card will only be purchased by a gamer and that is a video card's main purpose. The CPU on the other hard can be used in a variety of things. Most gamers though have a very good CPU in their rig aswell from what i know.
Might be wrong but it's probable that Nvidia is trying to gain suport in PPU located on the GPU rather than using Havok which is going to ulitize one of the CPU cores or something similar.

ATI has nothing to do with this statement, if they try to make this a battle of technology Nvidia have no real argument, nothing exciting for over a year now. They do of course have the market in their favor, but that's not a technological argument. And the person you were first replying to has never asked for a magic 50£ card, you're misinterpreting what he wrote.

Lets get something 100% STRAIGHT, I was posting about Nickolai's comments in post #3 not the OP's.

I should have quoted him so my own mistake.
