Looking at getting a new car as my circumstances have changed and our MINI is nowhere near big enough any more. What I'm looking for is:

  • 5 seats (comfort not an issue for rear passengers)
  • room for medium-large dog in the boot
  • rear seats need to fold down
  • fuel ecomomy not a huge deal but should get ~32mpg+ on a long trip
  • nice to drive on motorway and around city
  • preferably an Auto (especially if DSG)
  • Not overly bothered Petrol/Diesel
  • budget around £25k
  • something a little sporty, not M5 performance, but a bit of grunt
  • would prefer something 2-4 years old
  • NOT a family car (scenic/galaxy etc - urgh!)

This basically limits me to Estates or Crossovers, and these are the cars that come to mind:

  • Audi Q5
  • VW Tiguan
  • Range Rover Evoque
  • BMW X3
  • Hyundai ix35

or

  • BMW 3/5 series estate
  • Audi A4/6 avant
  • Skoda Octavia (like the look of the new VRS estate

At the moment I'm leaning towards the Q5, it has the practicality without the family image, decentish performance but with economy, and Luxury. However the price is quite high, although the residuals are excellent.

Any thoughts?

Knowing very little about this price point and type a car the obvious choice that came to mind reading your top list of requirements (before I'd seen your list of potential cars) was either a BMW (3 or 5 Series) or Audi (A4 or A6) estate with some sort of 3.0L diesel engine and an automatic gearbox.

As above but with the A4 or 3 series if your big dog is a real "big" dog.

German shepherd just about had enough room in the boot of a B7 A4, don't think the newer models are that much bigger

I kind of like the ix35 as a budget option, but the engines are pretty crap.

New octavia estate looks nice, not sure how it is boot wise but I always found the hatch massive for stuff, limited for mutts.
