Hi all, have an odd one for you .

I just this weekend pruchased a Silverstone Raven 2 Case , i know this is the graphics card section but bare with me .

|So I fitted my mothetboard ( gigabyte ex58-Extreme ) and Graphics card radeon 4870X2 and all the rest of the bits and peices.

So I wanted to check my temps with the new case , cpu system all pretty good, 4870x2 however is now going mentle with gpu touching 110c at load and memory IO up to 120c, card killing territory , fyi I have the accelloro xtreme fited to this card and in my previous case it worked wonders ( GPU never greater then 60 c ) .

So to cut this considerably long story short I did a wealth of troubleshooting including re applying thermal paste and a whole number of other shinanigins , non of which worked , it got to the point where I thought , I had somehow damaged the card whilst fitting new case.

So as you may know the raven 2 mounts your cards etc horizontally , and I did remember the card cbracket not fully alignining with the case where you put the screws in , so I start messing with this a bit , removing the screws so as not to pull the card , aslo I tried switching off / on the big raven upwars fans in case the upward air flow was doing something funky with the accelro air flow . Again non of it worked .

I finally got the card to operate at the expected temptretures by lying the raven case on its side !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if I stand the case up normally ( graphics card is vertical ) the temps of the card go through the roof , I lie it on the side card is now in position where the PCI -e connection is running parrelel to the ground , the temps are back to being great .

now the card is heavy so I figure I will put something underneath it between the floor of the case and the card to support it , that way if it is caused by pulling too heavy on the MB that will sort it .

it didnt , so here I am have a case that I have to lie on its side in order to get the Graphics card stable .

Any thoughts anyone ?

Cheers

ati probaably designed and tested it in the normal orientation only

i would think about another cooler for your gfx card or a new case

It is probably a design issue, I suspect in the vertical postion you'll find the ATI reference cooler fine as it ejects the air out itself but with the Accelero XTREME 4870X2 you might be running in to issues with it vertical since it uses heat pipes and thus in the vertical postion is now trapping heat.

perhaps , but to such a degree , 60c full load to 120 full load ?

I guess a way to test the thery wold be to try it upside down , the heat trap should then shift to GPU- 01 ?

Ill try it

btw I uploaded some images etc here
