Mainly out of curiosity more so than anything else but do wireless routers go idle, ie stop transmitting their signal when there is nobody connected, or is the signal constantly on even when not being used?

I realise that there must be something transmitted in order for wireless adapters to detect the network in the first place but is this done through a polling system, sort of like the wireless adapter asking is there anybody out there and the wireless router responding?

Ultimately would there be much power savings if the wireless network wasn't being used to transfer data even if the network was being broadcast?

I'm not entirely sure as to whether there is any power saving from dropping the wireless.

I drop my wireless when my daughter is not here and there seems to be no immediate difference and when I enable it there is a signal straight away so i'm guessing even when its disabled in the control panel, its still running in the router but not broadcasting.

My DG934 from Sky never goes idle when transmitting wireless so i'm guessing again that its a constant signal being transmitted.

i don't know that 1 for sure ...... i think there is constantly 1 been transmitted .... or when your looking the device that looks ping's it and it reply,s bk ..... bt manual turn off turns the signal off

u wud have to google how wireless networks work :P

update ...... there is a power save mode on some wireless divce,s ....... its in configure device with the other options like b/g or just b or just g
