I now have three programs for watching videos on my computer; all of which are flawed.

Windows Media Player 11 : Diagonal Lines scroll from bottom right to top left.

WinAmp : stutters very slightly.

VLC : poorer quality than it should be.

The file I'm testing with right now is a .avi if that helps. Below is a picture of the diagonal lines...

<edit>Forgot to add a question =P My question is, how can I fix any/all/one of these problems? Or what do you use for watching files?

The diagonal lines look more like interference on the original source recording than an issue with the video player to me. Does WMP exhibit this behaviour on other files (of this type from different sources) as well?

Try Windows Media PLayer Classic, that's what is always use.

It does sound like a source or moniter issue though. And you would probably notice if it was the monitor.

are you using the most recent VLC? becuase im using that, and the quality is suppurb. always has been. Might be because you havent got the settings right on it.

get newest gfx card drivers

uninstall any codec packs, and use the ones from shark007.net and use mpc
