A worthy upgrade?

Yes it would be a decent upgrade but 1156 will be dead by the end of the year and replaced with 1155 when Sandybridge is released. You would be moving from one dead end socket to another.

I was looking to upgrade my 775 a couple of weeks ago as well, but opted to wait for Intels new chips. If you want an immediate upgrade maybe go SSD or get a couple of Raptors? I recently added 2x 300GB Raptors and set them in a RAID array and I've noticed a reasonable increase in general use.

Hmm, didn't realise that socket would be dead so soon?

Then again I am not sure I can bear my system being so CPU limited in games like Bad Company 2 etc.. Might have to re-think this then.

you could get a q9550 to get you buy for a while. it will hold its value for a good while yet as well

Sadly not supported as the OPs motherboard is a nForce 650i chipset. Best you could probably do is pick up a Q6600, try to get it to about 3GHz and stick with that until Sandy Bridge.

Been thinking about a Q6600 for a while also, but considering a second hand one is still around the £100 mark I figured I may aswell go the whole hog..

I have about £400 to spend on an upgrade, is a Q6600 really the best option?

You can get one for closer to £75 if you look around and it'd probably resell for not much less than that in a years time. I would avoid spending £400 now considering waiting a few months will get you something quite a bit better.

Sounds like I need to carry on my hunt for a reasonably priced Q6600 then, at least it will save me some money for now and hopefully give me the boost I need.

should give you a big boost. run 3dmark vantage write the scores down and when you get a new cpu do it again. you cpu is probably bottle necking your card. so it will be a win win situation

And then the socket 1155 will be dead after a year or so then another new socket and so on so its just a case of keep paying and paying to keep up with all the changes.
Thats the price you pay for using intel products.

Well the idea is this would last me at least 2 years or so anyway, my current system is pushing 3 1/2 years as it is!

Still a bit torn, i5 seems more tempting than trying to put a Q6600 in my current motherboard that appears to struggle to overclock Q6600's from what I can find out on the net.

Yep, they're also bringing out Socket 1365 as the 'enthusiast' level boards/CPUs.

in Q3 2011 release though, still over a year left if their Enthusiast release = October-ish sticks

essentially i7 970 build now (or soon if price drop to £450 is true)= good idea as it will still beat the 1155 sandy bridge, LGA1156 or 920/30/50/60/75 build now = bad idea as 1155 sandy bridge will beat them

Might sound like a silly question but if I am running it at 4 GHz, is it really going to matter for the next couple of years? I can't see this struggling too much with games coming out atm.... or will it?

I dont think you'll have any problems running the i5 760 @ 4Ghz for some time. Some games like more cores, but this chip is bringing you 4 already which is plenty.

Gaming is mostly about GPU and your running a 5850 which will keep you in good stead for a while also. It also depends on what res you run, the higher the more GPU bound you'll be the lower the more CPU dependent you'll be.

Not to mention (unless is bothers you anyway) you dont have to run all your games on max settings.

I would say if you where to upgrade you'll be very pleased with the performance you'll get.

1680 x 1050 is my current gaming resolution and this won't change unless my lovely gf buys me a 24inch screen for my birthday later this year..

After reading various issues with my current motherboard (not to mention the current issues with it sometimes needing a reboot to get display, since I got a 5850..) with overclocking a Q6600 I think that maybe an i5 might be a better option.

Thanks for all the input so far guys, its helping no end :)
