Hi all,

I am currently running an E8400 @ 4Ghz and while I cant justify the cost of a complete upgrade I was thinking about getting a QX9650.

After selling my E8400 the upgrade should cost me about £160.

Question is .....

What are the chances of me achieving a 4Ghz overclock with this chip and if I cant reach that would I notice any drop in performance over what I already have (assuming I can get at least 3.6Ghz).

The rest of my spec

MSI P35 Neo2

2 x 2 Gb Corsair DHX 800 (very happy at 890Mhz currently)

H20 Cooler

Antec 650w

Thanks in advance

just sell mobo mem and cpu on bay put the money you have set for cpu together with what they fetch and buy a i5 and ddr 3 set up or something like

ddr3 is like 70 quid 4gb
i5 like 150
motherboard for say 60-70 quid

or maybe a phenom x6 option.

not worth going the other older route when you can have a newer pc for sameish money

What is your E8400 struggling with? I really don't think it's a good idea going for a QX9650. £160 plus the sale of your E8400 is a lot to spend on a dying platform.

Saying that, i would'nt be spending the money on a i5 rig either as that platform will be killed off in the next couple of months as well. You could go with the six core AMD's but the new cpu's next year will also need a new socket so ther's no upgrade path there either.

Personally i would keep what you have and wait for the new platforms to launch. A 4Ghz E8400 is nothing to sniff at.

No don't do it. Not for that price. Q9550 2nd hand can be had for £130 less what you get for yours.

If you must have a quad, that's the way to go.

Better still sell up and get an intel ix or amd new rig.

To be honest i'm not struggling with anything.

Can run BC2 @ 1080 4xAA Max Settings etc

I suppose it's the upgrade itch.

I think i'm going to go with Pastymuncher and hold of until maybe early next year for a full CPU,RAM & Mobo upgrade.

Sound advice there from pasty me thinks. Thats my plans for next year as well. Lets see what new delights are coming our way. My setup like you dosnt struggle but we have the upgrade itch which is always nasty when the new stuff is just round the corner

Was also thinking of upgrading from E8400 @ 4ghz, but only cus of the upgrade itch. But I'm also going to wait till next year when new socket is out :)
