Hi there !

I'm thinking about building a desktop pc for a friend. He's not after gaming, but he wants a big screen for comfort, a 27". I'm thinking about going the APU route and I was wondering if the integrated graphics of the 6800K can handle monitors of 1440p resolution ?

Thanks !

The GPU part of the 6800K is the HD 8670D. That can output 1440P so you're all good, just make sure the motherboard you choose has a 'Dual link' DVI output, dual link is needed for 1440P..

awesome !

Then could you spec me a good motherboard with dual link capabilities and adequate RAM to go with these, to bake a good base unit ?

Thanks!

Look for a 2133MHz RAM kit to make the most from the APU, I normally would say go even higher 2400MHz+ but the Richland APU's ive used didnt like it.

Like Teppic wrote, that Gigabyte mobo would be ideal, http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4384#sp

APU with integrated AMD Radeon™ HD 8000/7000 series graphics:
* To use the onboard graphics ports, you must install an AMD APU with integrated graphics.

1 x D-Sub port
1 x DVI-D port, supporting a maximum resolution of 2560x1600
* Support for 2560x1600 resolution requires both a monitor and cable that support Dual Link DVI.
* The DVI-D port does not support D-Sub connection by adapter.
1 x HDMI port, supporting a maximum resolution of 1920x1200

Can't go wrong with Gigabyte, excellent quality and warranty, the only motherboards I build with now.

For ram find the best value 2133mhz kit you can find. Can get some great deals on 8GB and 16GB sets atm.

Can I just jump in and ask this.
I know APU's love fast memory when it comes to gaming but why does the OP need fast RAM if the user is not going to be gaming? - I'm just thinking that there is money to be saved here. Happy to be proven wrong.

Any tiny gain will be set back with higher latencies. You'd never see any difference in real use, perhaps +1-2% in some benchmarks, others could even fall slightly.
