A3 idle judder

Hi guys,

I've got my A3 but its started to idle very roughly. (2.0 TDI)

Not so bad in the morning, but when its warm it gets bad. I get a lot of jerks when simply idling. It wasn't too bad before, but I'm not sure if its psychology that now it feels worse because I think about it more, or it's simply been the same since it started, but it's really annoying me now!

I've changed my air filter, oil filter and fuel filter to see if it helped, but nope.
When I got a service done recently, they didnt change any filters but topped up my oil, I'm thinking of draining it and putting some good stuff in there?

I've also added some millers injector cleaners in my fuel to see if this can help clear any problems with the injectors but doesn't seem to have helped.

Anyone seen this issue before?
I've google'd it, but people don't seem to have much of an answer.

Whats a coil pack?

It's an 06 plate A3. I bought it from trade centre wales, would this matter?
 
Coil pack inverts the battery power to some insanely high voltage and then feeds this to the spark plugs.

How is the engine under load? When mine went (ford focus) it idled ok but under load the engine just stopped.
 
It could be the flap on the intake manifold not closing properly, a common problem on the diesels. Some can just be cleaned and recalibrated with VAGCOM otherwise it will need replaced which is straight forward.

Have you had the car scanned for fault codes and does the engine judder when you turn it off ? (A common sign of a faulty flap)
 
It doesn't judder when turning off.

It's generally all the time when the car is idle, which isn't very often since I do a lot of motorway miles and rarely hit traffic on the M4 at the times I drive, but during town driving is when I notice it most. When I turn it off, there's no issue at all, just switches straight off without a judder.

My friend used his VAGCOM unit to check out the car for faults a few months back, but I can't remember if the fault was there at the time. I'll have to ask him to bring it down again. Either that or I'll purchase one myself!

What I'm hoping to get out of posting on here, is to check most of the most likely things before taking it to Audi. Which is £100 odd to get it checked out, if they find nothing, they still take my £100 !

According to some website googling, it's possibly a flywheel/clutch issue? I don't even know what a flywheel is! :p
 
Do you have an Audi specialist local to you? They will stick the VAGcom on it for £15/£20 ish. My initial thought was coil packs too after my old A3 killed one of mine and started running on 12v :D. Could also be a faulty injector causing it too, there's no way offindingout unless you stick the VAGcom on it though so ring your local indys and book it in :)
 
The flywheel is like a stabiliser, it reduces vibrations from the engine to make it smoother iirc
 
Looks like i'm going to get the car checked out soon.

Mainly because I've been going through the history of the car and according to a document listing the parts changed just before I purchased the car, it notes the injectors (all) were replaced in oct 2009. I've just called the garage and they said all parts come with 2 years warranty as standard.

If I get this checked soon and the injectors are faulty, looks like I could get them changed under warranty!

This being said, if thats the case. Would it need to have had a full service history done by a VAT registered garage? I ask mainly because I've changed things myself in the past. Oil change/oil filter/air filter/fuel filter.

You think that would be a problem?

dont modern diesels have those dual mass flywheels, and they are meant to make the engine idle smooth.

If they start to go the rough idle comes back. Not 100% on that though
 
Called audi and they want 89+VAT per hour just to look at it.

I think I've found a specialist place in swansea, to look at it. Don't think they open until 9 as no one is answering the phone!

If it is the dual flywheel, probably gonna be a lot to replace, since i'll have to get the clutch done the same time. I'll wait to see what they say.
