Hi all,

Got my A6300 recently and loving it but feel I need something with a slightly smaller aperture for the effects I'm looking for.

With that in mind, I've been looking at both a nifty 50 and it's 35mm brother.

I've spoken to two friends who have both given me conflicting information so am hoping for some clarification.

With my camera being an APS-C and not a full frame (though the lenses aren't full frame lenses either) does this mean the 50mm actually becomes more like a 75mm and the 35mm more like a 50?

One person told me this is the case due to the crop, someone else told me that's not the case.

Obviously if I can get away with buying the cheaper 50mm, I'd rather do that tbh.

Thanks,

Andy

You are correct. the 35mm is efectively a 50mm and the 50mm a 75mm.

So when people refer to the nifty 50mm being an essential lens, they are referring to FF so you need to adjust.

With my MFT my nifty 50 is my 25mm f1.8. a 50mm would be effective 100mm and would be a long portrait lens.

If you need a smaller aperture you an always just stop down. If you need a bigger aperture you might need to buy a lens with a wider aperture;)

For me I found 50mm on crop a bit too long, and not wide enough for the things I shoot (mainly people/family stuff), so I practically never used it.
It could be worth going into store and trying out the different lenses and see which focal length would be more suitable.

I found my 40mm lens more usable, but for me 35-40mm (effective FL) is better, so for a crop camera you're looking at the 22-26mm range.

Get yourself a Sigma 60mm f2.8 if lens stabilisation isn't important. It's one of the sharpest lenses out there for the A6000/A6300. A steal at £119. 90mm on an APS-C might not be ideal for you though.

Sigma also do 19mm and 30mm versions as well for the same price.

Where can you go these days? Jessops have gone from the high street :(

Andy

I dont know about Kent but they've just opened a new one in Derby, so wouldn't say they had gone from the High Street..

When they almost went under Peter Jones bought them out, after closing a few stores they seem to be expanding again
