Hi guys

Looking for a quick bang for buck upgrade from a 3500+. First question is whether it is worth it at all. Socket 939 by the way. Second question is whether the 4000+ is worth the double price tag in comparison to the 3700+.

Currently am committed to Socket 939 so please no C2D fanboiz telling me I should swap out :p . I don't like the prices the X2 939s have jumped to (what's left of them anyway) and just can't commit to a full rebuild at this time.

Primarily a gamer.

Thanks

BA

You won't see much difference with either upgrade to be honest, with the 3700+ you'll get same clock speed 1/2 meg more cache and SSE3, with the 4000+ you get 200MHz more 1/2 meg cache more and SSE3, doubt you'll be able to tell the difference there. If overclocking i'd get the 3700+ and try my luck, though for a real upgrade with tangible results i'd get a X2 or Dual core Opteron tbh.

I just got a 4000 from oc to replace my 3500. Running stable at 3 gig, on stock volts. 12X250 . A 600 mhz overclock , well pleased.

Both the final 3700+ and 4000+ batches clock like crazy. One of my friends bought a 3700+ in the past week and hit 2.86GHz stock voltage :)

Real bargain to be had! :)

If you can find a 4000 get one. They do tend to clock slightly better and their 12x multiplier will work well on mobo's that can't do high fsb's.

For instance a 3700 on your board @ 250mhz fsb would 'only' be doing 2.75ghz whereas a 4000 @ the same fsb speed would be at 3ghz.

For the extra cash (not much these days) and considering you game it may be worth it! :)

I have owned both these chips, the 3700 was bought at launch and did 2.8ghz the 4000 was one of the kab1e's at the end and did 3.1ghz on near stock volts, both great chips. Bang for buck gofor the 3700, at £35 its a steal and looks like they are hitting 2.9-3ghz anyway :)

Wow £35 pound for a cpu of this quality is amazing, I couldnt believe this when I saw it.

Indeed, OcUK have some real offers going on. £17 for an Athlon 64 3000+

Tempted to buy one, just to see how well it clocks!
