a64 3700 upgrade to dual core worth it?

I have an a64 3700+ single core and have noticed a lot of dual cores for my socket popping up 2nd hand probably because they're all upgrading to the new intels. They are going for around £60 depending on the speed.

Is it worth me getting one for that price? Will a 4000+ x2 give me double the performance? It's just for gaming mainly.

For gaming it will help somewhat but tbh I wouldnt spend 60 on a 939 chip. You just wouldnt see much return.

For around the 100-120 mark you could get a budget 775 or AM3 set up.

what other kit do you have then apart from the Athlon 64™ 3700+

Like what Mobo and DDR memory, graphics card etc?

I'm wondering because if its good kit then there is the option of selling off your existing CPU/Mobo/Ram (perhaps GPU?) and adding the proceeds of the sale to the cash you have now and picking up a new CPU/Mobo/Ram combo!

Even without knowing further details I guesstimate with a little effort you could transform your older MonoCore socket 939 DDR-Subsystem into a modern DualCore socket AM2+/AM3 DDR2/DDR3 Subsystem for around £60 . . . I think that would be a much more noticable budget upgrade as not only are you moving to a MultiCore set-up your also getting the benefit of tech advances to the Motherboard, FSB, Memory, etc

A dual core is much better than a single core. I can't imagine what some newer games look like with 1 core as 2 cores has been standard for a while now. It depends what you want out of it really. £60 isn't a lot of money but it's a good chunk of a cheap up to date motherboard + CPU + RAM. Whenever I have made an upgrade like that, i've always ended up replacing the whole lot within 2 -3 months so it was money down the drain.

But the smart money would be on an i3 setup.

There isn't a 4000 x2, the dual core Athlons were the 3800, 4200, 4400, 4600 and 4800. I would save your money & put it towards a new system as although going dual core will give you a boost, socket 939 chips aren't exactly fast these days when you compare them against more up-to-date offerings.

If the dual core is an Intel with a motherboard + ram, yes. Otherwise, forget about it.

Current set up
939 athlon 3700+
Mobo a recently bought asrock 939N68PV-GLAN 939
RAM is geil value ddr 400
Graphics is currently an 6800gs xxx but I've already got an HD4850 coming this week

Really I don't want to spend anything until a game comes along that I want to upgrade for. Like an Oblivion 2 or Fallout 4-And then I'll go i5 or whatever. I just want to keep up to some degree in the interim. Oh and I'm increasing monitor size from my trusty, still working, 15 year old 14" crt to 1650x1080 22" widescreen and I'm worried about the resolution hike.
I'll know this week if the HD4850 helps in this respect. Thanks for all your help guys.

you wont find a dual core athlon for the 939 cheap, they are rare and will cost a fair bit.
last time i seen a 4400 x2 for sale it went for £88 i was shocked.

I did a similar upgrade from a 939 Athlon 3500 and although still a very old and dated machine the difference it made was amazing. I can play games like NFS Shift on my new 22" without any problems with reasonable settings. I Found a second hand dual core Opteron 175 on the bay. They sometimes fetch ridiculous prices but just keep trying. The 185's goes up £90 regularly and I wont pay that much for this old technology. I got mine for just under £40 but like I said I spent a bit of time bidding on a few of them.

For that price it was definitely worth the increase in performance.
