A7 vs 6 Series

I have a friend who is looking at buying a car for circa £18k (absolute top budget). He has had an E46 330Ci Sport for the past 10 years that has been his pride and joy and now wants something newer. He isn't interested in the 4 Series (probably because I have a 3GT and he wants something markedly better/different) and is currently looking at A7s. My opinion is that the 6 series will be a better shout, and with a quick cursory search the 640d F13 is just starting to squeeze into budget <60,000 miles.

Am I right in thinking that 6 series > A7? If so, what info can I throw in his direction to change his mind? Also, is it a bad idea to be looking at the F13 (or A7) at this end of the price range?

Wouldn't you really need to be comparing to an F06 (gran coupe) though?

Unless he doesn't need the 4 doors, in which case I'd probably go for the 6-series.

6-Series all day long. The A7 will more than likely have the god-awful Multitronic CVT gearbox.
However, £18k is the wrong budget for a 6-Series. It's way too much for an E63 and not enough for a good F13. F13s at this money will be bottom of the barrel. Good AUC ones start at £22k.

He should buy neither of them.

The A7 is basically just an A6 with a hatch at the back and some styling on the exterior. The interior is almost indistinguishable from that of the A6 - it's so similar I honestly thought it was the same, but it's not quite. So, you're sitting in an A6 segment interior in terms of your luxury feel. You get the same great A6 range of rubbish transmissions unless you go for a BiTurbo TDI, which you won't find in budget, or an S7, which you won't find in budget. So no thanks.

The 6 Series is a demonstrably better car in every way - the transmissions are better, the engines are better, the interior shares components from the 5 Series but is styled in a completely different and more upmarket way. There is no question that it feels like a cut above the car on which it is based which cannot be said for the A7.

But he simply doesn't have enough money to buy a 6 Series unless he wants a high mileage SE, so thats out as well.

Instead he should buy a 5 Series. It's not as good as 6 Series but he'll actually get a decent enough example for his budget and if he was happy enough with the A7 he'll be more than happy with the 5 Series which is a better car. Same engines as the 6, same infotainment, same gearboxes, etc etc..

He should buy neither of them.
*snip*
I hear ya, unfortunately he's got it into his head that he wants something coupe shaped (regardless of how the thing probably drives). He should just be done with it and get a 2.0 TDI A5 S-Line...

I really want to steer him away from the A7, but unfortunately he'll probably be irrevocably lured in by the Audi badge and coupe profile of the car. I'll try and steer him onto the 530d...

He should get some more money then, or accept that sometimes our choices are shaped by our budgets.

I'd like a 6 Series too. I don't have one either.
