I have an A8N-E NForce4 motherboard which works with a 2400Pro but not with a 9600GT. The PSU is an OCZ 500W. I know the graphics card works and I know the motherboard works. Can anyone suggest why they might not work together?

9600gt

The 9600gt has an extra power connector on the card itself - I think - is that plugged in???

If not try reseating the card.

If you are OCing try clearing the CMOS going back to defaults and updating your BIOS.

I have a zotec 9600gt - great card for the price I paid and OC's to almost 9800 speeds

Latest bios on the Nforce4?

Did the 9600GT not have some sort of feature with the latest Nforce boards where it would clock itself a bit higher?

BIOS reset; power connector plugged into card.

Motherboard appears to boot in that I get working keyboard lights etc. but the screen won't power up.

whilst it could be a silly suggestion, if you have a rather modern monitor, is the connection the same e.g. analogue or dvi from your old card/new card? does your monitor automatically pick up the signal, or would it have to be told of a different input if you have changed connection from the previous card?

Well, it didn't work on the Samsung LCD and a power tester confirms the PCI-E connectors off the PSU are putting out 12v. Powering up without the power connected to the 8800GT results in a high-pitched continuous whistle from the 8800GT

So it doesn't post with the 9600GT installed? or there is no video display i.e it loads windows and you can hear the windows startup sound but no picture?

The hard disk is blank, the motherboard appears to start as the keyboard lights flash and then work as if the motherboard has posted.

There is no video display and the status light on the monitor does not change from orange to green.

There is a 1013 BIOS update which supposedly fixes boot problems with "certain PCI-E x16 cards". So now all I need is to

a) shutdown SWMBO's computer.
b) add a floppy drive to it
c) restart SWMBO's computer
d) create a boot disk and copy on the awdflash and new BIOS file
e) shutdown SWMBO's computer
f) remove floppy and 2400Pro
g) fit floppy and 2400Pro
h) boot computer from floppy and flash the BIOS
i) remove 2400Pro and fit 9600GT
j) boot and hope it works
k) refit 2400Pro to SWMBO

Looks like fun. Chances of it all going according to plan? 50/50?

:(
