Its probably the front audio jumpers problem, they still don't mention it in the manual.

Do you have front audio, is it connected?
If not, you have to use two jumpers (which may be factory set) to short the left and right channels, otherwise those two channels will not work.

Take a look at this picture. Above the black pci-e connector are two blue jumpers, check that those are the same on your board, or if you have front panel audio check that the pins that have jumpers on in the picture are both connected to the front panel audio connector.

thanks for the info m8, my motherboard does not have those blue jumpers i will dig some jumpers out and try it

cheers

edit, thanks again joe42 it worked a treat

3rd or fourth time i've read of this happening.

All asus motherboards with Ac 97 audio (and perhaps other onboard audio) do not work out of the box in cases without front panel audio, or where the user does not want to connect the front panel audio.

It is not mentioned in any of the manuals for these boards that i have encountered.
Absolutely ridiculous.

Glad it worked for you, i hope you will join me in pointing people with asus boards who wish to use the onboard audio and do not wish to use front panel connectors in the right direction, as asus are unwilling to document this properly.

i bought my board agis ago and have only recently upgraded my case and dont wish to use the front audio, im supprised that asus has not found thi s fault and corrected it in the latest manual, strange thing id my brother has the A8N-Sli deluxe and his worked straight out of the box with no jumpers

Neither my A8n sli deluxe or my A8n32 sli deluxe had the jumpers fitted iirc. Thankfully i use my Audigy 2 instead.

i was nearly oing to buy an audigy as i thought the back sound was nackerd, luckily asus supplied the board with 2 jumpers probanbly for that very reason, glad its working now thanks once again m8 your a lifesaver
