I don't believe it!

My GPU just died, and on a weekend too, grrr!

I'm blaming folding.....

I'll tell you what happened....

I turned my screen on to use my PC, and it promply reported 'no video'.

Odd, I thought, it's definitely on, so I hit a few hot keys to launch apps, to see if that would jolt it awake, it didn't.

So I shut it down with keyboard shortcuts, which it did.

I left it 10 mins to cool, then hit the power button, it came on, no beeps, but also no keyboard lights, mouse lights, or screen.

It just sat there, switched on but not doing anything.

Over the next hour, I stripped all non-essential hardware, and tried again with my 'new' barebones system, and....nothing.

The only response I got was when I switched it on with the GPU removed, which generated the correct POST beeps, and my mobo hasnt got a gpu built-in GPU.

So I stole my daughters 7800GT, put it in, and bingo, I'm up again.

Tried my 8800GT in her machine, and lo and behold, hers doesnt work anymore, with identical symptoms to mine.

Thats pretty conclusive, I feel.

So, it's a good excuse to get a new GPU, but I've only had the 8800GT a year and a half.

Is that the average for folding to kill a GPU?

Anyone else had this?

And I'm going to have to think long and hard whether to subject my new GPU to folding or not...it's a worry!

Anyway, I'm getting a GTX260(216), which is just in my budget.

Do you think my 450w PSu will be man enough for the job?

Thanks for reading my rant! ;)

Unlucky :( The GTX 260 is a great card, but if you are folding don't get the Asus Glaciator as it dumps all the heat in the case. What brand PSU have you got and what's the rest of the system?

The psu is an x-power one, I dont know if thats any good or not, but I've never had any probs with it so far..!

The system is a quad 9400 with 4gb of 800mhz ram on an asus p5q pro turbo mobo, it also has an audigy2, 2x130gb sata hard drives, 1 ide cdrw, and 1 sata blu-ray drive.

I don't generally have any cooling probs, the case has 2 side fans and a large extractor fan on the back, which gives me a mobo temp of 28 and cpu temp of 45 when under normal usage.

And it's on 24/7 and stable as hell, except when the GPU goes pop!
