Not looking for advice AT ALL. I already have medical advice.

Firstly a warning, have you suffered from an abcess on any part of your body caused by an ingrowing hair or infection? If so, did you leave it be or seek medical attention?

Personally, I have suffered from small ones for years. Ones which when they got the size of a pea, went red raw, or just generally became painful I would go to the doctors for a course of antibiotics to clear them up.

I thought this one was the same! Late on thursday, my buttock crease was feeling a bit sore, felt like a little abcess was forming. Didn't think much of it. By saturday it was starting to be painful. Went to a walk-in centre on sunday and they prescribed anti-biotics. It was becoming v difficult to walk or drive. Sitting was painful as well! Drugs hadn't done a thing by tuesday, and was in incredible pain after waking up. Went to hospital Tuesday as advised by doctor.
Needless to say, I just got out! Was knocked out, and had it drained. I am currently quite happy on some nice painkillers!

This is the painful bit: I thought that the abcess was bad (Which ended up 1/2-3/4 the size of a ping pong ball in 3 days), this is nothing compared to having the first dressing changed today. They had packed it with Aquacel. This is the single most painful thing I have EVER had happen to me. Both removal and reinsertion. I really was stifling the screams! I had to keep telling the nurse to stop. Worse again, this might need doing for a few days! Nurse is coming round tomorrow to do it again.

Has anyone had these, that required packing, and how long did it actually go on packing it for?

I am serious when I say - at the first signs of an abcess, get to the docs. I certainly will be from now on!

And no, no pics. I think I will ask the nurse tomorrow to take a pic though!

I don't think having abcesses 'come and go' is normal, is it?

Depends. Some are caused by ingrowing hairs, some are blocked hair follicles. Can be a sign of Diabetes. Have known this in the past! Mine were usually caused by blocked follicles, but they are easy to keep on top of. (Yes I shower every day!) I work long shifts, and guess that the engineering environment does not help matters!

you mean a BOIL...

magnesium sulphate will draw all the puss to the surface you can get it from your local chemist.

anywya if it was in your lower back and you know have a hole the size of a tennis ball theres a name for it but i cant remember what it is, can take months to heal

Nope, an abcess. It was inside, no head to be seen, just a huge lump right under the skin!

Ouch....

Buttock crease? Are we talking between buttock and top of leg or..... somewhere else?

As in the top of my arse crack, on the left hand side.

Some funny replies in here actually! Makes me feel a bit happier!
And for the record, I am very hairy :p

Tell me your under more pain ? :P

I fell for you mate, if its anything like the pain im in and was in when it was very bad then Man be greatfull your in super hopical drugs!

Worst pain I have ever felt! They asked me if I wanted painkillers, told them I had plenty of paracetamol in the house. So they didn't write a prescription. However, after having th packing done I told them I wanted the better ones, tramadol. Which I now have 28 of.

Its not worth the pain to leave it!

Im much better today, at least, until the nurse comes around to pack it again! I plan to back at work on monday.

Holy thread revival batman!

I had another op to solve the same issue (kept flaring up every 2-3 months into more and more. Was in Monday for the op, and am bored stupid(er). This time it was stitched up inside and out, no packing this time! :D. Get stitches out on 4th feb. I have watched loads of films, and am sick of not being able to go out! Off work till at least then.

Had a general on monday afternoon, was out by the evening.

Pretty sore today. And the stitches keep pulling.

Man I've had the same thing, although mine was, in part, caused by Chron's Disease making me more susceptible to it. I've had about six in total, two or three of which were drained resulting in many many dressing changes, and three or four of which were treated with antibiotics.

Damn things are awful!

Yeah, I am very prone to abcesses myself, this one is the same one bothering me for 2 years, hopefully this is it gone and done with! They seem confident they got it this time. Incidently, I knew a couple of people years ago with crohns, horrible!

Thread is sick, you guys are freaks
How did you get your nickname :D

Just feeling sorry for myself at the moment is all :p
