My PC just stopped working the other day. When I power it on, it beeps twice and then switches off. It doesn't even get as far as outputting anything to my monitor so I can't even go into the BIOS.

I get a 9F error on the motherboard. I've been through lots of forums and they all seem to suggest a problem with power for this particular motherboard. I've tried all suggestions such as clearing CMOS, replacing power supply, etc.

One thing I read on a number of places was something about the 12V rail needing to be at least 23A. Has anyone else experienced this? What would you recommend? Which PSU should I go for if this is the case?

Thanks,

Yao

9.F. µGuru force shutdown 1. Power on -> Stop at 9.F.2. 0.0.->8.3.->9.F. repeat 1. OC too high 2. Power supply compatibility 1.Restore default setting for BIOS 2. Replace with other power supply

what PSU did you try?
2 short beeps is usually a CMOS setting error

I tried a fancy 500W PSU from PC World (I was desperate :( ).

I think the 12V rail had only 18A if I was reading it correctly.

AV8 was always reputed to be picky of PSUs so your PCWorld special may not have been compatible.

Tagan PSU + new CPU

Well, I'm about to buy a Tagan TG480-U01 480W PSU from here. That should work as thats what OcUK used when they spec'd a similar build here once.

I might bump up my CPU at the same time. The AV8 only supports AMD Athlon 64 / Athlon 64 FX 939 processors. I can't see any 939 64 CPUs or FX ones. Are these still sold, or do OcUK stock anything I can upgrade to?

Cheers,

Yao

BUFF,

A massive thanks for your help. Very much appreciated. I'll pick up a CPU at the same time.

Would you recommend the Opteron over the X2s?

Cheers,

Yao

at that price no, it's only slightly better (more L2 cache & may oc slightly better but unlikely to see on an AV8) than the x2 3800+ that is half the price.
You'll need an HSF for an oem chip though.

BUFF, i've started a new thread in the CPU forum for this. Apologies, but I'm being unnecessarily impatient today about it all. Anyway, someone is swaying me towards the Opteron. Would appreciate more of your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Yao
