Abit AW8 problems

I have an Abit AW8 mobo with Windows xp home + sp2 installed. Windows device manager shows an unknown pci device under other devices, even though there is only the graphics card installed. I have loaded the drivers from the mobo's cd also the drivers from the Abit website, but the problem remains.

Also when I try to install my internet software I get the message that I donot have usb ports installed & that there is not enough disk space. I have a 80 gig drive with only windows installed and my usb ports are working ok.
This problem only happens with this mobo. I have tried using a IDE hard drive and also a SATA hard drive, with the same results in both cases.

Sounds like you installed USB drivers etc before upgrading to SP2. This may have caused some problems - its something like that. Someone will clarify no doubt.

hang on was this a fresh new build? im building with this board in a week or so, just a straight swap for an ASUS p5s800-vm ....is this something i need to be worried about?

Tryed reinstalling the intel drivers ? as you`ve gone from a 865 chipset to a 955 just an idea.....it could be the sm bus controller

Yes this is a new build,I had a bad time with an Abit mobo about 3 years ago it took 2 weeks to get the thing working. I thought it can't happen again, I was wrong should have gone for an Asus board instead. Been onto Abit but no response from them yet.

@FirebarUK sp2 is included as part of my win xp cd and so is installed automaticaly.

@ Dougsnake yes I have reinstalled the chipset drivers.

Well i went from an asus 945x as it cooked its bios, to the abit and not had any bother with it at all apart from when i first got it it didnt know what my P D805 was but a bios flash later all running smooth.
Any chance of a pic of said unknown device?

dougsnake have you pushed your PD 805 much more? I was looking at getting a similar setup to you but was hoping the abit aw8 mobo would get me in the region of 3.8ghz. Whats holding you back? or just not pushed further?

No pic i'm afraid I've stripped the system down again in disgust.Could it be the settings for the ram or some other setting in the bios?. I let the bios auto detect the correct ram settings.

EDIT
Just found a bios update from jan this year which gives Enhanced compatibility with certain DDR2-667 memories. That is the type of ram I have fitted, maybe that would fix the problem. Is there anything to be carefull of when flashing the bios ?, never done it before.

Had it 3.5ghz but the fans start to do my head in (like a quiet system) as it starts getting toasty havent really pushed much more tbh and a 760mhx oc isnt bad at all ,bar getting a new hsf fan or water cooling im happy as it is and conroe is knocking on the door shortly :p

I flashed mine with uguru no problems at all, just pray you dont have a power cut ;) .
Your better off setting the ram manually as on auto detect it set my geil 667 to 400 speeds didnt really realise until a few days after  .
Btw thats the current bios im using and have read of people moaning about certain ddr2 sticks but mine worked no problems whatsoever, carnt hurt to put it on can it.......goodluck

Flashed it ok also changed my bios ram settings to match whats printed on the ram sticks. If I click the unknown device properties tab & select details I get this info. No idea what it means.

ACPI\ABT2005\3&2411E6FE&0

Installed the guru from the Abit cd that's fixed the device problem. But still got the software problem.
