Hi all, first post here :p

I recently built a new pc (truth be told a small upgrade turned into almost a new pc, funny how that happens)

Anyway got the AA8XE/P4 3.2Ghz/2x1Gb crucial pc2-3200 with a Gigabyte 7800gt and a few other bits living in a nice Antec 180 cooled off with a reserator to keep the whole plot quiet.

Trouble is even with the cpu fan beep/shutdown disabled in the uguru section of the bios, the machine wont start unless a fan is connected. The fan can be removed ok after its past post ....any ideas to help a newbie out?
done a few searches but didnt find anything related. cant be a new problem tho.

Go into the uGuru menu and then Abit EQ. Disable everything in there. The machine will now start without a fan connected.

ok thanks for that
I'll check that in the morning.

after reading a few of the posts on here it looks like I've bought pretty much all the wrong bits for the money  wish I'd found this site sooner...oh well

yup, got it, there was an extra option in the bios I missed
sorted now
thanks for that :p
I've printed of the stickies on how to find the limits on clockability so I'm off to have a fiddle with that and see if I can come up with less noob questions.
I have a spare old xp1250 to experiment on first before having a go with the main machine

Why do you think you bought the wrong kit? What you have is excellent stuff, 12 months ago that was the best S775 overclocking motherboard and it's still a good one today.

A few 'gotchas' to be avoided;

1. Disable the game accelerator
2. Leave the PCIe bus speed on Auto. The 925 chipset could not lock the PCIe clock, so it calculates it on the fly for the overclock. Even on Auto, it tends to fail to boot above 285MHz FSB.
3. Set your RAM speed to 400MHz (1:1)
4. Manually set the PSB to 800
5. Don't be frightened to turn up the voltage on the processor, if you have good cooling (and you do) then you can increase the voltage substantially without overheating.
6. Upgrade to the latest BIOS (25 is the latest release I think).
7. Holding down the 'insert' key on power up resets the BIOS so you don't need to muck around inside the PC.
8. On the later BIOS versions after 3 boot fails it resets the BIOS to the last good configuration so you don't have to reset the BIOS back to ground zero.

With that cooling, then 4GHz is definitely possible from a 3.2GHz 775 P4 chip.

Try the above suggestions and come back to me if you have any issues.

hey thanks for the tips :D
I like the insert key one cos I'm sure that'll be handy

4Ghz sounds excellent too. I've run it on air at just less than 3.7 and its rock stable with BF2 at 231mhz. wound it up to 240 on air but it would only boot into XP and BF2 wouldnt start so I turned it down a bit and away we go (BF2 is my test of stability, if that wont run then its no good to me :p ).
That was before any voltage fiddling or water cooling.
Now the w/c kit is installed and the temp doesnt go over 43c I reckon I should be able to wind the Mhz up a bit more.

The 'oh no' was from what I've read here I shouldve gone for the AMD version of the fatality and not intel. the vga is fine happy with that but the ram looks like I got the cheap n cheerful when I shouldve gone for maybe mushkin or similar. Also zalman w/c doesnt seem to be the overclocking choice, more the silent running choice....

I dont think the game accelerator will work on sub p4 3.4 cpus...or am I wrong on that one

I'll have a go with your pointers and let you know how it goes.

The antec case seems to be keeping everything nice n cool with all the 120 fans in it  the sata drive enclosures feel just slightly warm but cant seem to get dtemp working on these.
