Hi all,

I've been working on a new build this morning. The time came for it's first power on but when I pressed the power button there was an immediate siren coming from the motherboard. I had a look on the net and people seem to be saying its power/heat related? Does anyone know specifically what the problem might be?

One thing - I don't have anything plugged into the CPU fan power socket - could this be it? Its a 3-pin fan I've got mounted to a Thermalright 90 so I just bunged it onto one of the molex connectors with an adapter so as far as the motherboard is concerned there is no cpu fan (I didnt have this warning siren on my DS3 though).

[aside - will a 3 pin socket fit the 4 pin connector on the motherboard?]

Thanks in advance guys.

edit - any questions or things ive badly explained just ask :)

Yes, it's almost certainly because you have no fan plugged into the fan header, but if you don't need it, you can turn it off in the BIOS.

A 3-pin plug will work fine on a 4-pin PWM header.

Cheers mate I'll give it a go. I just switched it off in case I did any damage. I'll try plugging it in the motherboard socket now and see if that works. :)

That seemed to do the trick but now I'm getting a code saying "CPU changed or is unworkable." :(

I think this is unrelated so I'll have to do some more research but thanks again for solving my first problem. :)

Right, I went into the BIOS settings and selected "Load fail-safe settings" and this seems to have fixed the "cpu unworkable problem". If anyone reads this and knows if this is a common thing or at least normal please reply and put my mind at ease.

I'm using an Abit IP35 board and a Q6600.

Thankyou.

make sure u put the ram @ stated volts & timings, this board can be fussy if not set right.
CPU changed or is unworkable

cmos clear would have sorted this im sure :) grt board these :)

All stock at the moment mate, it seems to be installing WinXP nicely. I'm going to spend the next few hours running some stress tests and watching the temps. Thanks. :)

I might be back!

I did exactly the same build last night, IP35 and Q6600 and had exactly the same problem, nothing to be worried about I think, although I dont have a case speaker.

I can't seem to get the USB drivers and chipset drivers installed, abit's driver CD is rubbish and without them I can use the usb ports to use the downloaded ones :S
