Abit IP35-E, at fault?

Hi there,

i've received a large order from overclockers for a new system i'm putting together for a friends father.

I'm having a lot of difficulty with it. I can't get past the post screen. When i first fired it up it didn't recognise the keyboard (also brand new), so i reset the bios using the jumper. Then restarted, i got it to realise there was a keyboard there and went into the bios to set it to boot from dvd as i was going to install vista.

When i reset, again it didn't react to the keyboard and just froze (oddly seeing the conroe cpu as single only whereas it'd seen it as two before). I grabbed another keyboard and restarted, still nothing, it just sat frozen on the abit logo.

Every time i went back into the bios it had forgotten the settings i had put in. However if i manually reset it the keyboard would work, only to not work again when you exited the bios.

I tried a number of times but the same loop kept happening. Bios reset, restart, frozen, lost settings.

As far as i can tell its the motherboard thats doing this. Everything else seems to be working just fine.

I've had trouble with abit boards before but gave them another go as the price was good. That'll teach me to stick with Asus.

Does anyone think its something else that i've overlooked?
 
I tried both USB and PS/2. Makes no difference.

Not sure what bios version. I can't do anything to change the bios, there is no OS. If i had to guess i'd say it was bios version 10.

It also boots up, powers off, and boots back up again as others have mentioned about the Abit IP35's, i thought that was normal.

You can flash without an installed OS - in fact flashing in DOS is the recommended way ...

It currently is for the -E & standard IP35 albeit abit reckon that they'll have an updated BIOS to fix it in due course.
 
there's a sticky re flashing from USB on the abit forum - there's almost certainly a post on this forum too.
 
i've read them, they may aswell be in Hebru. From what i can read i need to download obscure programs to make the motherboard think the usb key is a boot disk.

Its going to take a week or so to send back to overclockers and get a different board.

I've reset the cmos jumper about 20 times and its made no difference at all.

It'll take about 20 minutes and some patience.

That's quite a decent turnaround if you consider it's 24 hours by RMSD to them, then 24 hours back by courier to you, it's only taking a day, two days maximum to test your board, find it faulty and authorise a new one for despatch. Depending on how far away from OcUK you are, you may be as well to take it back in person. Do get an RMA number first though.

Have you tried it the old-fashioned way? With the battery out, the power off and the jumper covered overnight? Some modern motherboards have very large capacitors and they don't clear the BIOS instantly like they used to.
 
what's the rest of your spec?
is the RAM set at the mfr's recommended voltage & not the JEDEC 1.8V?
