Abit IP35-Pro BSOD on XP Install

Hi,

I just purchased an IP-35 Pro with Intel Q6600 and GEIL 2X1GB 6400 RAM.

At first I kept getting memory related error codes in POST, so I loaded fail safe settings and even hard set the memory to its stated timings 4,4,4,12. I also upped the memory voltage from 1.8V to 2.1V.

Every other setting is pretty much the same and temps are cool as CPU is 35 MAX.

After that I got it to boot from CD and into XP setup.

From here it goes through loading windows setup and just before the screen where you start choosing how to install XP I get a BSOD and this message :

STOP 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

It is the same code every time and with different combinations of memory and either a SATA or IDE HDD.

I ran MEMTEST and at first it crashed after getting errors, and then running it again for an hour I got 2 errors but it was still going.

I am on the latest BIOS 07/09/2007 Version 11 (but not the betas).

Soooooo, does anyone think I have got a faulty Motherboard or faulty Memory?

Can anyone interpret that stop code ( I have had a quick search and found it might be to do with missing drivers that XP needs however I have never had trouble installing XP on these same drives before).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Mark

Sorry, forgot to mention.

I have tried installing with both sticks and with each of them in turn.

Also tried different slots.

I have tried some older memory but I can't get past the C1 POST error (which is something to do with memory detection) with them.

Is anyone on here using GEIL 2X1GB memory with this board, if so how is it working ?

Cheers

If you're getting errors in Memtest, it's the memory. Send it back, get some more.

edit: Just read your last post, that throws a spanner in my theory. I'd still get the old memory replaced.

I had problems getting G.Skill 2x2GB to run reliably. Turned out to be the due to the IP35-Pro defaulting the FSB to 340MHz. This might already have been addressed by you using the fail safe settings, but try changing your FSB to 333Mhz.

OK I changed the settings as follows :

FSB 333
Multiplier X7

CPU Clock speed of 2331. Its a Q6600 so thats fine.

I set the divider to 1:20 (that took it up to DDR799 (800))

Booted into setup fine, but again at the same place (just as it says STARTING WINDOWS) I got the same error code.

Tried both memory sticks on their own with them both crashing.

Thanks for the input so far guys. :)

Hi,

Currently I have taken the SATA drive offline and am just trying to use the IDE drive.

My DVD-ROM is connected to IDE as SLAVE and HDD as MASTER.

I have changed settings as you asked for both SATA and IDE modes to AHCI.

I also noted that in the Hard disk Boot order it listed my IDE drive as on interface SCSI-0 ???? Its definitley not SCSI.

Anyway I changed the settings, rebooted and still the very same error in the very same place.

Just a side note, I tried a different copy of WINXP SP2, just to see what happens and it didn't even get past loading the drivers. It just hung. It could be a scratched old disc though.

I had problems using an older IDE drive with Satas connected, the IDE runs off the JMicron JMB363 iirc.

Have you tried this? CD on IDE set to master, Sata drive, set the sata mode to IDE compatible.

For ACHI or RAID, XP needs F6 drivers, I had to slipstream some drivers to get my XP install working (on RAID control), tried everything same BSOD as you (dual boot with Vista 64). Works fine now.

OK thanks, I will give that a go tommorrow.

Will reply back tommorrow evening hopefully.

If anyone has any other input on my motherboard/memory crashes please feel free to add your thoughts.

Cheers

Sorry. I was in a rush last night and gave you some duff advice. Of course the Q6600 is still on the 1066 bus, so you want your FSB set to 266 (CPU multiplier 9, memory multiplier 1.5, if my maths is correct). Basically just make sure that the IP35 isn't trying to set the FSB too high for your memory.

Hi,

OK I set the SATA Drive to IDE mode and have set the DVD-ROM to MASTER.

I got the same error again trying to start windows setup.

I swapped over the DVD to a CD Drive and still had the same error so that rules out that.

I am now running Memtest again with 1 stick of RAM in it to find any errors. However I have just noticed that it says the following about my Q6600 :

L1 Cache = 64k

L2 Cache = Unknown!

I thought the chip was supposed to have 8MB of L2 Cache ? I am running Memtest 3.3 from CD.

Is there anything wrong with my CPU ?

I have also set the settings to 266FSB X 9 witha 1:1.5 Divider.

Anyone got any more ideas ?

Thanks

OK,

Bit of an update.

I have tried literally every combination for trying to install windows xp.

I googled the stop code I get every time and it is something to do with not being able to control/detect any HDD's (SATA or IDE).

I have downloaded a disk utility for my IDE drive, and it loaded ok and was able to delete/create and format the partition. However I still have the same error when installing XP.

I have also downloaded the INTEL RAID/SCSI drivers and loaded them from F6ing as Windows booted. (Even though I am not using RAID or SCSI drives!). This did not help.

Finally I tried Memtest again and left it for a while with both sticks in.

I am getting an error in the same place, at various times.

I left it overnight and this morning had about 4 counts of that error.

Anyone know what it means ?

Not sure whether its my board or memory.

If anyone has any ideas on what I should do next please let me know.

Thanks

Just thought I'd better bump this as I've been struggling with a similar problem,

E8400
Abit IP35 Pro
2GB Corsair XMS2 6400 CAS 4 DMX

I've got two DVD drives, one DVD-RW, both running off the ide lead.

Two 74gb raptors running off Sata ports 1 + 2 , in a RAID 0 setup

One 500gb Samsung HD501 Sata hard disk running on its own.

Each time I tried to install windows I would press F6 so that I could show the setup my SATA Raid drivers, it would let you put them on and then blue screen,

The only way to get round it was to install Nlite on another pc, and add my own Intel SATA drivers to make a custom windows install disk, worked first time :)
