i know that this is an old set up now but i'm playing round with my old system before i pass it on to to a mate. For some reason the bios is only seeing the cpu as xp1600+ when in actual fact its an xp 2800. How do i get it to recognise its for what it is?

Any help would be much appreciated.

ok tried that but the only option is user defined or 2600, when i try 2600 i get a message saying has changed or is unusable, change in bios. When i go to user define, its still says 1600????

Is everything else concerning the CPU set to default?

The NF7-S sometimes needed 'convincing' from what I remember (haven't used it it around two years). If it's still being a PITA, set the FSB to 166 and the multiplier to x12 and see what it does. However, I'm surprised it doesn't automatically pick it up on 'default'.

iv got a nf7-s with a mobile barton in it. the board does offer loads of tweaking options, have you got the latest bios for it? i think its bios 27 or something on those lines. been a while since i tinkered with it.
if all else fails, set it up manually, set the multiplier to what it should be and the fsb to 333 or 400 depending on the type of cpu it is.

as for overclocking, iv got 3 sticks of ram and got up to 370fsb. at 373fsb it started to pick up memory errors. not the ram though its the northbridge hitting its limit.

Bios is lates version 27. Have changed FSb 133, 166 and 200. When i run CPU Z it says my bus speed is 200 but rated bus speed is 200, is this where the problem is?

Try one of the modded BIOSes. I'm using the D26 BlackMantaray. I don't think any of them were specifically intended to fix issues such as yours, but they might help.

They all have some slightly different tweak that allows a small proportion of users to achieve slightly higher clockrates. Any of the CPC-on ones by either TicTac or MantaRay would be fine. Try a couple different ones and see if they solve your problem.
