Abit NI8 SLI GR - Data Corruption Issues?

Hi everybody,

I'm hoping somebody can help me with a problem I'm trying to track down with the above motherboard that involves data corruption when installing and/or transferring large files between from my Sata drive to IDE or vice versa?

I understand from a Google search that there are some 'issues' with the Nforce4 chipset and the data buses becoming saturated during large file transfers.

Has anybody got this board and solved the problem?

I'm going to try removing the Nvidia SW IDE driver file and replacing it with the stock Microsoft driver, which I've read might hlelp?

My spec is:-

Abit NI8 SLI GR Motherboard (upgraded to latest Bios)
PentiumD 805
1 GB (2 x 512mb) Corsair Value DDR2 (667 Mhz)
1 x 160GB Samsung Spinpoint SATA hard drive which is the Windows boot drive (set to Sata II mode)
1 x 40GB Western Digital IDE drive, set to slave mode on the Primary IDE channel.
2 x Optical DVD drives and IDE channel 2
1 x 7800GT Graphics Card

The system is not overclocked at all.

Windows otherwise runs ok.

I was going to try pegging the Sata drive back to Sata I mode, to see if the lower data transfer rate helped?

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

This smacks of being a very similar problem to the data corruption issues that were seen on SATA ports on the old Socket A Abit NF7-S nForce 2 mobos.
That was resolved by Abit releasing an updated BIOS.

I've had a good read of that thread, and it would seem there are some "issues" around with this chipset...

I put a brand new SATA drive in my machine last night, removed the sound card/modem etc, and did another Fresh Windows install and then installed the latest chipset drivers (excluding the Nvidia SW IDE Driver), graphics card drivers and nothing else!

I unzipped a large file from my USB key to the drive, and that went fine, but then ran the installation of the unzipped files (the CPC Benchmarks as it happens) and then got the "Data is corrupt - Abort Retry" error message...

I tried the same operation on my work laptop, and everything was fine.

I tried to install Java Runtime on my machine, and during the data unpacking and installation, a similar error appeared.

It's a shame, as otherwise the chipset seems to be pretty quick, but of course if I can't do basic installation/file operations, it's pretty useless!!

I think I'm going to give the SLI bit a miss, return this board and go down the Intel chipset route....

Honestly mate, I spent weeks working on a way to get around this, and when I thought I had got it working, it turned around and bit my head off :(

It seems that people have sorted the problem by updating their drive firmware, but it doesn't work in all cases :(

Had this problem, tried two seperate nForce Mobo's... both corrupted my HDD.

Am currently on the Asus A8V-E SE VIA-Based Mobo... solid and no issues since Feb.
