About £400 to spend on first DSLR + Lenses.

Regarding body vs. money, the kit lenses today aren't actually too bad - they're good to get to grips with and see what kind of focal length you like shooting. So certainly, I'd probably look at a DSLR with a kit-lens to start with and see how you get on. Once you get to grips with the camera, you'll possibly start finding yourself being limited by the lens (either you want a longer lens or one with a wider aperture for low-light/creative effect). That's when you start saving your pennies for nice glass :D

Regarding bodies, they're all much of a muchness at the entry level so best thing to do is get yourself to a camera shop and try them - particularly how they feel. Given it's weight compared with a compact, you want to make sure it's comfortable to hold and use. For £400, you're looking at either a Nikon D3100 or a Canon 1100D new.

Another thing to think about is second hand, DSLRs have a huge second hand market and people look after their kit. Take a look in the MM as there's usually some kit available there. For £400 you could probably get a second hand 20D/30D (Canon) or D90/D5000/D5100 (Nikon) although make sure you get one with a lens (some people sell body only).

Hope that's giving you something to think about :)

Sorry for thread hijacking but im in the same situation and will be buying in January :).

Fantastic cheers Dunky, even though it wasn't aimed at me :D

(saves me opening a new thread for the same/similar response ;))

I believe that currently Nikon's entry level models are slightly better then the Canon offerings spec wise, if its any help to you both.
Although having a camera thats comfortable to hold and use is more important then 2% difference in IQ, so get down to a camera shop and have a play.

I will be, thinking of a both of them or a 1000d if i have to go down in price a little bit.

Need to sell my things in the MM before anything.

Cheers for the help :).
