About to bite the bullet on a 970

Whats also getting conveniently overlooked is the spec of peoples machines being different and no mentioning of which drivers are being used.

Seriously you are sounding exactly like Greg. Blaming it on the "red people"...have you actually spent time on the 970 4GB thread? It consist of mainly of 970 owners that claims not having problem, and Nvidia users that don't even own the 970 arguing against 970 users that claims to have problems! Most of the "red people" you referring to were just commenting (and some people) making fun of aspect of Nvidia's false advertising/deceiving their customers and user base.

There's been reports by 970 users on stuttering and other issues by users even way before the whole false-advertising spec and vram scandal blown-up, and they were "helpfully" assured/put down by Nvidia users (many that don't even own the 970) that is just bad driver and Ubisoft's broken badly ported games...

Seriously...I cannot understand how anyone could still recommend the 970 at this moment, when people have to pay more money than a same performance AMD card, and to take a chance and hope for the best that no problem will occur?

And before you go take my comment as a "red guy" having a go at Nvidia, for your information after the launch of 970/980, I recommended the 970 over 290/290x EVERYTIME for other people...but that was before I knew the problem with the 970. On the 970 thread, someone who sent his 970 back and put his old 7950 back into his PC to tie him over reported that games felt smoother despite having lower frame rate...that's quite alarming! So it might not be just the amount of vram available on the 970 is the issue, but possibly something else (possibly the design of the memory accessing interface) are causing frame pacing issue.

Seriously, green vs red shouldn't belong in a thread where someone is seeking buying advice...if someone cannot say they are 100% certain the stuttering issue would not occur, then he shouldn't recommend the 970. I mean I wouldn't recommend the 970 even if there's just a 5% probability that the problems might arise.

Not going to take you as a "red guy" mate because thats not how i see your posts at all. Unlike usual suspects!
I cannot comment on the 970 issue and yes i have seen a lot of people complain about stutters in game play with a 970 but i don't truly know how many of these people actually have 970 cards. Though i'm not saying its not a problem obviously is when its on the nVidia forums!

But i have seen the usual suspects blowing it out of proportion in certain threads including the 970 thread which is what im referring to. I also said i don't know how people can refer a 970 at its price point over a 290X! Because to me the 290X is a better value card!

Either way if this was on a AMD gpu id be put off it, same as im put off a 970!

But i still dont think its as bad as its getting hyped up to be. I've not really got up to or over 3.5GB of Vram on my 290X but i play at 1080p most of the time. When i've checked the highest i've seen it was 3.3GB or just under 3.4gb and that was just once! But that's my experience so from that i would assume its still a good card for 1080p! Nothing more though over this resolution i would assume is when you hit problems!

I own a MSI 970 and R9 290p.

Both cards will get you 60+ FPS in nearly every single game so performance comparasions is not relevant if you play on 60hz/fps.

I notice stuttering on the 970 which I dont on the 290.
When playing games the 290 it seems to feel more powerful and smoother than the 970.

My overall system powerdraw between the 2 card is 50watts give or take 5. I think Nvidia played some Hocus Pocus regarding power usage in the same way they did with the Vram.

Driver support for both is as good as each other.

If I was gaming at 1080p I would buy the cheapest card.

I am not a fanboy and a previous owner of a 660Ti SLI, 670SLI, 680, 280x and 290x

The Vram issue may not be a problem for some people but other feels like they have purchased a gimp producted whilst being lied to, which leaves a dirty taste in ones mouth. If you purchased an Audi A3 with a 2L engine and later they said 'Hi, there is really a 1.8L engine in there' you would hit the roof.
