Hi guys and merry christmas to u all this is my first post :)
laptop is showing its age now and cant play some games that i got for xmas which i am quite sad about, have done some research online and came up with this build

Antec 300 case
modxstream 500w PSU
ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GPU
Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4(AM3) PCI express DDR3 M/B
4Gb G Skill Ripsaw DDR3 1333 Main Memory
500Gb western digital caviar blue HD
Pioneer 22x DVD optical drive

Games i will play Operation flashpoint 2 dragon rising, CoD, Left 4 dead 2 and WoW they are my main games

The monitor that i have now supports 1600x900 resolution

I am wondering if the build would be recommended by u guys or if i could go cheaper :)

also have 2 questions that are bugging me and cant seem to find the answers to

1. I have read that i need a modular PSU with the antec case but one with longer wires and some ppl have wrote that it was a tight fit. Has anyone got this case? if so what PSU do u use?

2. Some people wrote that i might need an aftermarket cooler for the CPU i thought u only needed that if u were going to overclock the system :S pretty confused by it lol and if so what cooler would u recommend for that motherboard?

Regards

Looks good, The psu will be fine, What cpu are going to use??? I would suggest changing the 4890 for a 5770....Change the hard drive to the 500gb Samsung f3

damn lol forgot to add it in :P its gonna be:
AMD Phenom 2 x2 550 3.1GHz black
also forgot to write in my budget which will be around the £500 mark :)

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

Don't know any thing about AMD rigs so will leave that to the experts.

You could go for a 5770, will do that res ok and run cooler.

You don't need a modular psu, but it will help with cable managment. If you do get a non-modular psu, you just have to be creative as to where to route the cables.

You can just use the cooler that comes with the cpu if you are not overclocking as i believe they are not that loud, but i would get a aftermarket one anyway as i am sure you will overclock eventually.

PS. What cpu are you getting?

EDIT
Damn my slow typing. lol :p

yup i have read that it has that potential :D dont know if i will be doing it though until i get a better understanding of what is reqired :) and think that this rig should be ok with the games i am goin to be playing atm :)

Apparently amd have released a microcode for motherboards that prevents the unlocking of the 3rd and 4th cores. If you run a Gigabyte board in hybrid mode you can get around this quite easily though. Oh and if thats just a rumour then it relatively easy to unlock the cores but you need a motherboard with a 710 or 750 Southbridge.
