I'm about to wipe my current x64 installation and start again (don't ask  )

Brief sys specs are:
A8N-SLI Premium - BIOS 1009
BFG 7800GTX
2gb Corsair
AMD 4000
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic
WD 74gb Raptor as boot drive & Apps - SATA
300gb maxtor as storage - SATA

Going to use:
Forceware 91.31 (was on 84.25)
nForce4 6.86 (was on 6.69)
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic, Platinum and Fatal1ty Driver with OpenAL support 2.09.0001 (was on 2.07.0004 I think)
Logitech G-series Keyboard Software 1.02.218, 64 bit version (same as currently using)
I don't need the Setpoint software for my G7 do I?
**I've read of "amdcpu64.exe" - anyone want to elaborate on that - what is it and where do I download it from? **

So my plan of attack is:
1.Unplug 300gb maxtor (don't want to wipe my data)
2.Unplug X-FI
3.Replace USB mouse & keyboard with old naf fPS2
*I'M PLANNING TO REFORMAT USING THE X64 INSTALL DISC - IS THERE A BETTER WAY OF REFORMATTING?
4.Stick x64 install disc in and tell it to reformat And then install x64
*SHOULD I PUT ON AV & MS DEFENDER & SPYBOT NOW (FOR ACTIVE PROTECTION) OR LATER?
5.Put on nForce drivers (apart from onboard sound and firewall)
6.Reboot
7.Put on Forceware drivers
8.Reboot
9.Turn off and put X-FI back in
10.Put X-FI drivers in
11.Reboot
12.Turn off and replace naff PS2 mouse & k/b with my G7 & G15
13.Install G15 software
14.Reboot
PUT ON AV & MS DEFENDER & SPYBOT NOW IF NOT DONE ALREADY
15.Plug in network cable - IIRC Nvidia port is the better of the two?
16.Windows updates
17.Reboot
18.Windows updates
19.Reboot
20.Windows updates
21.Reboot
22.Windows updates
23.Reboot
24.Office 2003
25.Office Updates
26.Reboot
Start installing other stuff with plenty of reboots & only using confirmed working x64 versions.

Anything wrong there or any advice welcome. I want to keep this install perfect

How can you kill your PC by reformatting?

If you have never reformatted how do you know it will kill your PC?

I can't see anything obiously wrong with your idea. Formatting every now and again is a good idea.

if you reformat you lose all your data and pictures and stuff, therefore your pc is dead.

if you reinstall, nothing will be there anymore ....

Nothing wrong at all in a re-format every now and in answer to the OP's post, nowt wrong with the flow either.

Read what the OP has said!! Point 1 - He's removing his data disc!

yes but he'll have loads of o ther stuff in his windows partition he didnt realise he really needed (or she)

I think you're been a bit presumptious that the OP hasn't a clue what he's doing!

I'm quite sure they are savvy enough to backup what they want, bookmarks, cookies, etc, to ensure their reformat will be trouble free.

Just because he's reformatting and ensuring the drive is clean of rubbish doesn't mean he's losing EVERYTHING now does it.

.........RIGHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

anyway. that seems fine, dunno why you have to unplug your drives and remove your x-fi. just put your x64 disk in, choose install, and format your windows drive then it'll install. BUT make sure you back up anything you need on your windows partition.

you guys really do make a meal out of reformatting, it isnt such a big deal with lots of unplugging etc. just make sure the drive you are gonna format is backed up, or you dont want anything on it.

Reformatting doesn't delete anything.

Well now you're been pedantic, no it doesn't delete anything, then again neither does the delete command, but for the sake of the OP's post, formatting will make his disk able to install a new OS on top as if it were a fresh disk.

Yes, I sure do...pure comedic genius from Slam...as with all his posts completely idiotic person...gotta love'em.

On the note of re-installing...all you need to do is make sure you back up and only format the Windows drive/partition.

Re-installing is really a simple thing and I generaly do it once a year sometimes every 6 months. It keeps your pc clean and tidy as there is no waste from old un-installed programs.

On the note of backing up...wasn't paying attention couple of days ago and was rushing a re-install completely forgot to backup. Bit of a shame as I lost loads of emails (going back about 4 years) aswell as bookmarks and a few other things. Anoying but all my actual data I want is saved on a seperate HDD (My Documents is set to a different drive from the Windows one).

So yeah, pay attention to backingup data that is only stored on the Windows drive and have a clean and faster time afterwads :)

Remember to backup firefox extensions/bookmarks & saved games before reformatting.
I've done the first half of Half Life 2 now 3 or 4 times cos I reformat & forget to backup my saves :(

Nope, I do :)

Funny thing is relating Slam62's comments to his sig :p

Good thing about having a small Raptor & a big storage HDD is that I can copy the entire contents of the Raptor onto the storage and use that for backup.

Reason for disconnecting x-fi - I read somewhere on planetamd64 that this is best (could be complete carp tho)

This is almost as funny as my mate, he told me that reformatting my raptor will make it slow down to normal 7,200 rpm speeds lol.

Searching on PlanetAMD64.com has revelaed the answer to one of my questions:

No. It's just a driver / fix for dualcore processors.

Been searching OCUK & PlanetAMD64 for comments on the drivers;
Reading up on Forceware 91.31 here it seems rather problematic.
NForce4 6.86 doesn't get slated tho.
X-FI Drivers seem to get good reports
