Im just about to purchase:

256Mb XFX AGP GEFORCE 6600GT DDR3 TV+DUAL DVI

to replace my old tired 128Mb 4800SE. I want a card that runs games at 1280*1024 with no problems at reasonably high settings.

Just checking that it will it work with my current system?

Power supply enough? (I dont overclock)
Any Bottlenecks?
Does the card have a power supply directly into it?
Will there be a good improvement?

Thx

Yes it will work with your current system and it will need a molex plug free from your PSU. You don't appear to say what your PSU is unless I've missed that? So it is difficult to say if it will be suitable.

However given that you are paying ~£150 for the card I'd highly recommend the OcUK 6800gs which is a far better card, it has the same amount of Ram but is a much faster GPU especially when you consider that it has 12 pixel pipelines rather than 8.

I currently have an Enermax 350W. The card is costing me around £120 so an extra £60 is pointless if AGP is dead. May as well save the extra cash for a big PCI upgrade in a year or so.

Just checked and your motherboard supports AGP 8x so you should be fine. So far as I can see the card doesn't need it's own power supply, and so long as your PSU is a reasonable make and around 400W it should be enough.

It should actually be a nice upgrade over a 4800SE.

The only thing you might hear is some people suggesting the 6800 LE or 6800 non-ultra as being a better buy than this.

Hope this helps :)

The PSU will cope fine but the reason I was suggesting the 6800gs is based on OcUKs prices on the website the difference in price is only around £10 which isn't much considering how far ahead the 6800gs is.

If £120 is all it will cost you and that is your limit then the 6600gt is probably the best new card you will get for your money and as said will offer a vast improvement over a 4800se.

I did a PSU calculator a few days ago and for my potential new system and it was something around 290W needed so I should be OK. If the card does need its own power I have plenty of molex's left.

Hi there

My advise is save a little more and get the much quicker OcUK 6800 GS as they are now only £129 +VAT. :)

12 pipelines, with the possibility to modify upto 16 pipelines and 256-bit memory interface makes for a much quicker card. :)

The new ATI X1600 AGP which was announced last week may also be a promising option for a cheaper performance card...

Most definetely not, it is parp. The GTO is quicker and I would imagine the 6600 GT will give it a good run for its money too.

Im using an Nvidia FX5500 256mb AGP 8x cost me £80 and its pretty good i think it should give u the resoultion u want!

Sorry but i hate ATI (not starting a flame war)!
after the last 9250se card i had

Not sure about the modding to 16pipes Mr Gibbo, the GS is a PCI-E native with a bridge chip for AGP, thus is only built with 12 physical pipelines, you need an NV40 chip to be able to mod, which only leaves, 6800AGP 6800LE AGP etc
