Hello,

I'm just about to upgrade my PC and wanted a 2nd opinion to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid/wasting money/buying something incompatible/rubbish etc :D

I'll be buying:

  • Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail [BX80623I52500K] - £179.99 inc VAT

  • Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) - £49.99 inc VAT

  • BeQuiet Dark Rock Advanced CPU Cooler - £41.99 inc VAT

  • Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard [GA-Z68AP-D3] - £84.98 inc VAT

Subtotal: £356.95

rest of my PC:

  • Antec TruePower New Modular 750W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

  • Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 SUPER OC 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

  • Asus P5B Deluxe (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • 2x GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM @3.2GHz
  • Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower - Black
  • just 1 HDD

I have no desire to use SLI/Crossfire. I'll definitely be overclocking and use my PC mostly for gaming (and general PC use).

Thanks a lot!

That RAM looks good, think I'll go for that instead... cheers!

As for the motherboard, I was a bit underwhelmed with this review: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/2011/09/09/asrock-z68-extreme4-gen3-review/7

I dont know so much about motherboards. While I don't have a particular price range that it must be under, I dont wanna be spending money on features I won't use... but I also don't wanna regret buying a cheaper one a few months/year down the line.

I basically just want to play games at max settings as well as being somewhat future-proof... That's my only real expectation for my new build.

D'ya think its worth me spending a bit extra on my MB?

Cheers!

I was just about to suggest that RAM as I've just bought a set of that myself, and also that's the processor and motherboard I'm getting (the Asrock Z68) in January, personally, I'd spend the extra, I really would, but that's down to you.

Definitely switch the ram though mate!
