I'm about to pull the trigger on the Gigabyte 7970:

It's a big purchase for as £300 is a lot of money on a graphics card.

I'm reluctant because they've been out nearlly a year and don't want to buy it when the new 8000 series will be released. Is it safe to buy or are the new ones out soon?

Also is there much difference between that model and the higher clocked model that runs at 6000MHz?

Please help

Last news I heard of any substance - 8970 delayed to atleast October*, GTX780 likely to be sooner (w1zzard from TPU and Ryan Smith from Anandtech dropped hints about it being sooner rather than later but no idea what thats based on) and I've other info that suggests a mid-year release but from everything I've heard its not a massive step up from the GTX680 (~25% performance gain).

* Some people are suggesting AMD may not produce another completely new GPU on 28nm and will hold out for 20nm and an early next year release for what would be the 8970.

Good question, don't actually know if there if any physical difference between the two.

They may of may not overclock to the same level, its a lottery anyway.

The 7950 is only ~10% slower clock for clock, but you would have to overclock is to get it up to 7970 clock speeds.

£330 is good for a 7970, but £240 for a 7950 is better. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-098-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1673

Thanks for all the replies.

Looks like nows as gooder time as any to get it then.

One last question...would my OCZ 600W silent still be good enough to power it?
