About to return my PC..

Okay, well I'll have to copy some stuff I wanna keep and restart. :) Thanks for help guys, I'll let you know how it went if/when I get back online.

I'd be inclined to just reinstall XP on the offending HD and run tests on it.

...what tests should I run?

Scandisk, hdd benchmarks and the manufacturer's tool(s).

Okay, to start with... This post is coming from my PS3!!!! - Thats not a good sign. I took the SATA hard-drive out of my broken machine, put in the IDE, put in the windows disk and installed it with no problems. When I get on the desktop, only thing there is recycle bin, no other icons. The ethernet cable had a orange line on and it wouldn't connect to the internet, I did everything I knew and it wouldn't work, so I RE-installed windows this time with the cable in too see if that would set it up manually, it didn't ask me anything about it. I then RE-installed windows on the old machine, and now the colour is all weird and the recycle bin looks like Windows 95, and the internet doesn't work on it either. So...

Stupid question, did you install the drivers for your board! you should have an installation disc which includes all the drivers for onboard items such as your ethernet port, then install your graphic drivers.

Usualy windows only places the recycle bin on the desktop, you will have to create short cuts for your other items.

So, when I put in the motherboard driver disc, it says

"Detect no proper item" under the drivers tab.

I can't change the screen resolution from 640 x .... and I can't change the colour from 4bit. And the monitor disc didn't help at all

Oh and when I press start it says 'owner' instead of my name.
and it doesn't read the monitor either, under properties and display tab.

Do you know anyone who knows about computers? I think you really need hand holding through this.

Assuming you've got the right mobo disc just get your ethernet drivers installed then you can get everything else you need off the net. As for the owner thing, well you can change that later on but it's not important now.

You need to install the drivers for your gfx card to be able to change resolution and the like.

Remember this is a user & software issue rather than your hardware.

Get those ethernet drivers installed.

Well, I am typing this message from my 'broken' now WORKING machine!

Hoorah.

Thanks everyone for helping me out. :) All I have to do is replace my hard-drive. :)
