About to travel back in time...

Got the keys to the property today, and er, I'm a bit confused.

There is only 1 phone socket, but it isn't a master BT socket, its just some sort of aftermarket effort to match the plugs and switches in the house. There is no master socket anywhere that I could find.

Based on this, I guess there is no internal wiring, so the benefit of having an ADSL faceplace is somewhat removed. Right?

There might be a grey external connection box outside mounted on one of the external walls.

OK, I'll investigate tomorrow.

If there is, what then? look to ensure the wiring is right or is it as simple as you really really need a master socket?

As far as im aware the grey box outside is the master connection (socket)and all extensions are run from it. Have seen them on new build houses upto 5 years old but bt may have been using them for longer. Everyone ive seen has about 2ft of grey capping/trunking leading to the greybox. Most new builds have a telephone outlet in everyroom bar toilet/bathroom now.

If there is no greybox outside have a look to see if the telephone cable comes from a overhead line a see where it enters the building. There is normally a junction box either white or brown about the size of a small matchbox.

Overhead line to my neighbours on each side ? Check.

Wire to our new place ? Negative

Wire coming off the middle distribution box that should go to our house, wrapped around the telegraph pole and dangling at the bottom ? Check.

So, no phone line connected to the property then ! I presume Plusnet (who I am getting for phone as well as bb) will be equipped to sort this, or at least get open reach to ....?

No dial tone when you connect a phone? If not it will be whatever plusnet say a new line costs, then I guess open reach will reconnect the wire to the property.

Hope you're having better luck with your Plusnet order as ours has gone disastrously. Two weeks passed without any communication being received until yesterday when we learnt that the previous owner moving out had caused a stop to be put on the line and now we're being told we have to pay £49.99 to reconnect the line. :-(

Last time I spoke to them they felt confident it would be installed on May 8th (yes, that long away) but I'm ready and waiting with my draytek. I think looking at the wiring for the phone socket (its in a big spool in the loft with a cut end !) bt will end up putting in a new master socket somewhere

overheard cables usually mean master socket fitted in the loft. Ideally you need to plan before BT turn up where you want the master socket as they might put it somewhere more convenient.

BTW Plusnet are owned by BT. The engineer that comes should be BT Openreach as with all phone line installations of the ilk.

N.b. BT Openreach who will install the connection are working for Plusnet and not you ... so if anything goes wrong or gets delayed I think you find that they aren't interested in talking to you. Some horror stories in, I think, this weekend's Guardian Money section of people who've moved into new build homes and found that its taken 3-6 months for Openreach to install the phone connection. Seemed to be such a regular problem that someone in the article gave the advice of not buying a new-build unless you had confirmation that the phone line had been installed before purchase!

I moved from a place that had 8 meg (that was back in 2009) to a cottage that gets 0.5 meg max and been stuck on it ever since. Town nearby that I used to live in, got an update to FTTC recently and we can't taste any of it!

So, line finally went live today

It's gone up from 10Mb/s to that over the last few hours. Seems pretty fair at the moment. Sync details from the modem when I got the 10Mb/s stats were:

Up Speed 448000
Down Speed 15616341
SNR Margin 6
Loop Att. 31

I guess the reason I got slower speed tests was down to the IP Profile messing around. Any idea what I might finally end up syncing at?

From that Line Att and SNR you're connecting near to your max and those connection speeds are quite decent.

Yeah, I'm really happy, considering further up I said 10 would be great.

Interestingly, Plus.Net support pages recon my connect speed is 21Mb when I just checked now. I'll see what they settle on.

Am i likely to get any more upload speed?

Plusnet cap the upload to 448kb or something like that, you can however ask them to uncap it. But apparently it has an effect on the download. (I wasn't affected so it should be fine)

Final result. Looks pretty impressive to me considering at the start of all this it looked like 6-14MBit.

Top end of the prediction, rock solid, and a nice low ping.
