Yas Island

When was the track built?

In 2006, plans were announced to develop Yas Island, located just to the east of Abu Dhabi, into a new tourist destination, with a major part of the plans centring around a 5.5km race track. The diggers rolled into what would become the Yas Marina Circuit in May 2007, with the project completed by October 2009.

When was its first Grand Prix?

In 2009. The track debuted as that year’s Formula 1 season finale, with Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel winning from team mate Mark Webber and the already-crowned 2009 champion Jenson Button. Vettel would go on to secure his first title in Abu Dhabi a year later, amid much crying.

What’s the circuit like?

The Hermann Tilke-designed track is dominated by its 1.2km straight between Turns 5 and 6 – which, with slow-speed corners marking its beginning and end, makes it a honeypot for overtaking moves. Other highlights include the tricky run through Turns 10 and 11 into 12, which forces the drivers to brake hard with bags of lateral load still on the car. Track modifications ahead of the 2021 race, shortening the lap slightly to 5.28km, have only added to its excitement.

Why go?

Yas Island was a blank canvas for developers to turn into a tourist attraction, and 11 years and $40 billion later, they’ve nearly finished doing just that. Seven hotels, Ferrari’s indoor theme park, a mall, a water park, a golf course, a beach, a concert arena and a nightclub, all framed by perfect Emirati weather. What more could you want?

Where is the best place to watch?

Assuming you can’t get a room with a trackside view in the spectacular whale-shaped Yas Hotel – or a berth in a boat’s cabin in the marina – opt for a spot in the West Grandstand, a great place to watch all the overtaking action into Turn 6. Or if you’re more there for the atmos, stick yourself in the Main Grandstand overlooking the start-finish straight and enjoy Abu Dhabi’s famed pyrotechnics. It might be worth trying to get a seat high up in whatever grandstand you choose, though, if you’re looking to keep out of the sun.

Just a reminder, but consider it a pre-warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to this race thread and the thread for the first race of the 2023 season as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

Leclerc and Perez would still be 2nd and 3rd in that scenario.

Leclerc has 3 * wins, 4 * 2nd and 3 * 3rd.
Perez has 2 * wins, 7 * 2nd and 1 * 3rd.
Russell would have 2 * wins, 1 * 2nd, 6 * 3rd.

Although if Russell DNFs and Hamilton wins, then Ham would jump up to 4th due to 5 * 2nd places.

None of this is accounting for fastest lap point, but I would guess an opposing team would pit the lower placed driver and steal it back if needed.

Hoping for a straightforward race with some close battling and definitely no safety cars!

What’s the count back with Perez/Leclerc/Russell?
Assuming the former 2 DNF’ed and Russell wins with no fastest lap they are all joint scorers for second place

I think it's Leclerc->Pérez->Russell. Leclerc would have 3 wins, Pérez and Russell two apiece, but Pérez has more 2nd places.

Pit Max to help Pérez? Don't be daft. Might happen with Sainz but it'd depend on the shape of the race and remember that Sainz is only 6 points behind Hamilton - he'll like have his own WDC battle to fight.

Latifi's last race too, hopefully not Mick Schumacher's but looks like he'll be a reserve for 2023

Of the four of them, I think Mick's the only one we might see get a regular drive in F1 again. I don't see Seb choosing to come back, Latifi is Latifi, Dani Ric has shot his reputation to bits at McLaren. Only Mick feels like he has unfulfilled promise.

I think in a team that actually knew how to run a race Mick would have been better, Haas have done nothing but screw up races where he's been in position for points this season. He's also (Brazil aside) generally finished ahead of Magnussen since mid-season - the issue is Magnussen got his points haul at the start of the year when the car was better relative to the rest of the grid, as usual Haas have gone backwards.

He had 3 big crashes, Saudi and Monaco early on and then another more recently when he aquaplaned in the rain at Suzuka, anyone could have done that.

I admit I've not paid much attention to Mick and his driving but I don't see why he deserves another chance. He mostly made headlines for his crashes rather than having a good race. I'd much rather see someone new getting an opportunity.

It's difficult to make headlines in a Haas, and particularly hard to judge his first season performance against the Russian potato. This season, he's struggled against KMag in qualifying, but is ahead 9-6 on race results (in races they've both finished). I think that's enough to justify his continued involvement in F1.

Fair points and as I said I've not really paid much attention to him. I'd have no issue with him continuing but once he's out of the driving seat I'd much rather see a new face getting a chance.

I think its reasonable that it's micks last race. Hasn't been great. Hasn't been terrible.

As for latifi. Yeah no arguments there. Long overdue!

If there were 2 drivers who deserve to go at end of this year its latifi and riccardo.
Can't quite believe it with riccardo. But his performance this year has been unacceptable.
Mclaren would have p4 for sure with a slower car with 2x norris'.

Thanks Daniel. Your contribution to alpine this year was perfect!

Still plenty to fight for I suppose so should be an interesting race weekend. I wonder how Sky will approach Redbull with their questioning about Max/Checo without RB getting butthurt?

I can't talk, I did this...

/edit - Don't know why that has Sundays date on it, I placed it months and months ago.

Perhaps the date it will be settled.

During testing I used up 'free bet' winnings to put money on Redbull, Ferrari and McLaren to win WCC. Even though Redbull have got it tied up and McLaren would need many teams to be disqualified all 3 are showing as TBC atm and unable to cashout. Assume status will change on sunday :) Missed a trick, could've cashed out Ferrari for a big profit a few races in and Redbull has obviously done well too :)

I think the date is the 'end' date of the bet. Like if you backed Man City to win the premier league it would say 6th May 2023 or something.

I actually took screenshots of a few specials that ended up coming up that now looked rather good!

Red bull to win 12+ races was 7/1
Leclerc most poles was 7/1
Verstappen to win 13+ races was 16/1

I have to admit that I think we might be in for a slightly drier spell of young talent compared to the last 5 years where we've seen the likes of Norris, Russell and Leclerc come into F1.

The big upcoming driver next year is of course Piastri and after that probably Pourchaire who is already a reserve for Sauber and then maybe Lawson/Hauger for Red Bull/AT but its looking a bit drier than it has for a few years to be honest.
