Abu Qatada

Justice should be based on what is right, not how much it costs.

It costs far more to jail a murderer for life than it does to pay for his victims funeral but you wouldn't advocate letting murderers go free.

There isn't really much difference where he gets imprisoned though. Probably the main reason for his deportation is that he can actually be sentenced instead of held indenfinetly.
He will be imprisoned for a long time either way.

The home secretary's attempts to deport radical cleric Abu Qatada will be delayed for at least four months, a court hears.

The ECHR might as well have upheld his appeal. This will never end!

Lawyers for Abu Qatada said they had "significant evidence" that undermined assurances that evidence obtained by torture would not be used against him.

I know his lawyers would say this but considering her blunder with the dates - I wonder if the 'assurances' she guaranteed will come back to bite her!!!?

What actually are we going to get out of deporting him though?
We could just keep him locked up.

in the long run it would be too expensive. If we kept him locked up there would be an appeal put in likely every few years resulting in wasting millions of tax payers money, plus the cost for keeping him locked up, plus the costs for likely keeping him locked up in a special location away from general prison population who would like to get famous by shanking him in the wash rooms.

If he is wanted for crimes in another country then surely we shouldn't harbour him here ? I know its becasue we can't extradite him to a place known to use torture. However if we got assurances from Jordan that he will get a fair beating...errrrr I mean trial, then surely we can take that at face value even if we know its lip service ?

We have enough problems controlling our own criminals without having to import more TBH

Just deport him and screw whoever tries to fine/sue us - he's not our problem. Isn't he here illegally in the first place?

Pretty sure the fine from the EU for kicking him out is less than the costs of keeping the guy. Not sure why we're still keeping him here.

Muslim cleric Abu Qatada will not be deported to Jordan, after he won his appeal at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac).

The appeal was upheld after his lawyers claimed he would not get a fair trial in Jordan.

Home Secretary Theresa May will give a statement to the Commons on the ruling shortly.

Mrs May had been given assurances by Jordan that no evidence gained through torture would be used against him.

Tomato sauce

It appears that May can't get her dates right nor the proper assurances from the Jordanian authorities.

The issue doesn't seem to be the assurances from Jordan themselves, more that the judges decided that the Jordanian legal system isn't sufficiently robust to give those assurances enough weight.

So all we need to do is fix every country in the world so we can deport people properly.

As much as I dislike the outcome I would say that it is still better to live in a country guided by the rule of law rather than governmental (or even worse public) whim.
