Hell!! \m/
Was gunnna post in Motors but since its ac/dc related - feel free to move.

Basically my cars batt is dead, (lost key, etc which found now). Now I have a Jump Starter however somehow lost the ac adaptor and once I can get the unit charged and jump start, it's all good.

If the link works that's the J. Starter I have. In the Q and A people ask with no answers? Can someone link me or help find a compatable one? (or would I need a whole new one? - a J/S)

There is an answer from Halfords in the Q&A:

"Hi, thanks for your interest in Dynamic Jump Starter. Unfortunately we do not stock spares for this product."

I imagine it will be a pretty hefty transformer. Are there any ratings by the input on the unit itself to give you an idea?

Do you know the specs of volts/amps of the AC adaptor? You should be able to find a replacement, Maplin sell some which you can vary the voltage and come with a bunch of interchangable tips.

Aye yeah that's what I have been trying to find. Just looked at the unit and theres no info. I could go down later to Halfords and ask if I can either open/see what plug it uses and check on that, then buy one?

My mate might have a charger but its a different J/S (think it broke). Providing it's a similer spec (ie, >1400cc engine) it should be ok?

One stupid thing, I've done it before on my 106 but just to be sure, connect black from J/S to car metal then red from J/S to red batt term? Now do I leave the car connected to the batt still as we've no spanners about atm

The unit should have a panel next to the AC inlet with some specs, e.g. "230-250VAC 12VA Max". Could you find and post that?

Pretty much any 12v dc source that fits the socket will do the job.

Higher the ampage output, the faster it will charge up.

This.
It's just a small lead acid battery in those J/S.
IIRC it's a 12V 6AH battery. I used to have one before it died so I took it apart out of curiosty.

Maybe move this to motering as it's now a motering issue

Just got another J/S which the same unit but with a mains. It's the same J/Ser - the mains says -

AC/DC ADAPTOR MODEL hb-dc12v 6w
input 230-240vac 50hz
output 12 vdc 500ma

The funny thing is at the end of the mains cable with this J/S it wont plsug into my exsisting J/S. (not had a chance to try it in this new j/s although they are the same.)

Anyway......

I hooked it up and my cars lights, etc all worked. When I tried to start it, it ticked, like click and as I hold the key it clicks click clicks. No sound of it trying to turn over.

Could it be?

The J/S needs fully charging (think it was 2/3)

Wrongly hooked up? Black cable to car chasis and red went DIRECT onto the car batt red term. Some sparks. The car was still hooked up to the batt. Should I disconnect the car from the red term then the J/S onto the batt?

Fuel or engine oil. (both lights are on? and I do atm have low fuel anyway so I was gunna fill up this petrol can - I will need fuel anyway once she is started.

The click is the starter solenoid firing, but there's not enough current available to spin the starter. Let it fully charge :)

I'm quite frankly amazed (and a tad suspicious) at 2-3hours to charge a battery at 500mA, which is capable of turning an engine over.

Oil light is on because the engine isn't running (no oil pump = no oil pressure)

Boost packs need to be fully charged to be of use, they've usually got a 20Ah battery in them, so put it on charge and leave it there till tomorrow.

OK back here with it I hit test and theres about 12.6DC VOLTS on it so gunna charge overnight and try in the morning. The batt is completely dead so it makes sense needing more than someone who just had thiers die....... I had an immob drain it to the point no lights come on.

Ok last thing: the car is hooked upto black and red when I hook the JS red - do I keep the cars connected or disconnect that then the jumper?

Thanks guys.

Also the unloaded terminal voltage is a rather bad proxy for the actual state of charge, so don't set too much store by it.

I have the same jump starter (my car doesn't get much use as i have a work van). Details from it are as follows

AC/DC
MODEL: HB-DC12V 6W
INPUT: 230-240VAC 50Hz
OUTPUT: 12VDC 500mA

Tried it again, still clicking, this is fully charged. Once hooked up my lights work but once the j/s is discon'ed the batt is dead still.

Holding the reset counter and turning you use diag mode (ford fiestas, etc) and petrol level is 028, I know when I did last use it I was running lowish. Wouldn't it not crank though and try to start?

it would still fire the fuel pump and try to crank.

leave the pack connected for 30 minutes, let the car battery draw some current from it (just enough to use the lights and dash electrics, don't try to start it) then charge the pack again
