Hearing millionaire footballers insist that they would play for nothing has become difficult to swallow for many fans.

But for one player - AC Milan and United States defender Oguchi Onyewu - at least, it's been more than empty rhetoric.

The 28-year-old offered to play for the Italian giants for free after spending almost the whole season sidelined with injury since joining from Standard Liege in the summer.

I think Saha offered something similar to Everton- that they wouldn't have to pay him until he was fit again but they refused!

edit: Nice to see, especially from a player that probably hasn't been on a crazy salary- in football terms. Players like Sol Campbell and Gallas could learn a thing or two from him!

It's probably just a ploy to stay at AC Milan a year longer as he expects to be released, still pretty decent of him considering he could earn a wage elsewhere though.

Sorry but why the go at Gallas, is this for the extravagant demand that he get the same pay he already has to keep doing the job he's doing rather than take a 25% pay cut while doing exactly the same job to exactly the same level?

I personally dislike Campbell for his antics and the way he left Arsenal, but he was being paid well while at the top of his game, he's taken a fairly small contract to play with Arsenal and a significantly lower fee than he used to get.

What exactly has Gallas done wrong, if he'd stayed at Chelsea he'd EASILY be on 120k a week today, I mean without question, he wanted to move clubs to play the position he prefers and wanted a new challenge and turned his nose up at improved contracts to do so, again can't really see what he's done wrong.

Offering not to be paid because you were injured is a decent gesture, though if you get injured playing for your club I think its a bit silly, injuries are a risk and they happen. Getting injured while playing for your country though, still not really the players fault but still a pee take on the club.

Footballers really should pay out their own insurance to cover their wages IF they get injured on international duty. Getting injured while working for the club is one thing, getting injured while you're working for someone else, isn't.

Realistically national sides should be forced to adequately insure the players they use, I think some do, many don't and a huge number of clubs have paid millions in wages when a player is injured during an international game.

Tbh I don't know the details, just that Arsenal were refusing to meet his demands.

My dig at Campbell is in regards to his dealings with Portsmouth.

Arsenal want to drop him to 60k a week, matching Theo Walcott's wages, from 80k a week to move from a 1 to a 2 year deal. Gallas hasn't shown a single sign of slowing down or getting worse, infact he's improved every year at Arsenal, he's played most of the past 3 seasons and only gets injured because we never ever rest him when he's fit. He's on 80k a week and wants 80k a week and more than a one year deal like he'd get at literally(and its rare you can say that and mean it) any other club in the world. 80k a week, for him, is an absolute steal, Sol was on 100k a week, the side effect of signing "free transfer" players, huge wages and huge signing on fee, and he was on that years and years ago.

Gallas isn't even close to being unreasonable, Arsenal are being utterly pathetic, I'd be frankly completely and utterly out of control angry if Arsenal decided I was only worth what Walcott is on, (if I was Gallas) and I played more and was in a completely different league to him in quality. I'd be even more angry the club wanted to publically embarasse me for asking for the same wage I'm on for doing the same job I'd be doing and to get a similar contract any other club in the world would offer.

Infact its been widely rumoured 2-3 other clubs have already offered much more in wages and a longer contract at clubs moving up in the world(Roma and a rumour of Real aswell) and Gallas is still negotiating to stay at Arsenal. The fact he's on 80k a week when he could have done a Bridge and stayed out of position or on the bench at Chelsea on 50% higher wages says it all about him.

Sol, I agree, ish, he a was an ass when he left us, and someone with THAT many millions in the bank could have said Pompie could keep it and stay out of trouble, then again Curbishly could have done the same, especially as he helped get the club in trouble. Ashton I don't blame, Sol walked into a ridiculous contract at Notts County, Ashton got injured playing and doesn't have the option to move elsewhere and persue his career, I don't mind him getting paid AT ALL.

Curbishly and Sol amongst many others could all have let the clubs in question off to help them out. Again as both have long careers with many 10's of millions left to make in the future, Ashton didn't.

Asking for money that they owed him? Wouldn't you do the same if your employers owed you money too?

Of course not Owenb is loaded dont you know??:p

Its only fair Campbell gets what he is due, if he still wants it...i dont think any less of him for doing that.

As for Gallas??...i dont think Wenger/Arsenal are being fair on him...give the guy a pay rise....he bloody well deserves it in fact cut Walcott down to £20k a week....let him leave, dont think many teams out there would want him...perhaps a lower league team or something. But fact is that if we lose Gallas over some silly pay rise then ill be very disappointed in Wenger and Arsenal as a whole...we should be keeping our best players if we want to win things. Fact is Gallas left Chelski who are more than capable of winning things to come to a team who hasnt won FA in the past 5 yrs.

Aye, I understand there's a pay structure at the club, but it seems to not be an adequate excuse for the coincidental wage rise of poorly performing players while better ones are released for nothing. I remember two years ago Flamini went before Adebayor got a bumper contract. Fail.

I'm not sure Walcott should be targetted per se, but there are a few others whose contracts I wouldn't mind losing to keep Gallas.

Who knows, maybe this summer, we're really going to see a lot of movement. Perhaps Gallas is being used to show who's boss or something.

I love the way people seem to know the ins and outs of players contracts, the wages they receive etc etc. When in reality it's just best guess from the media.

How do we know Gallas isn't being unreasonable with his contract demands? He might be asking for a white rabbit to be murdered every week. We are not party to his demands, only a best guess from the media. I don't see a problem in getting rid of him (should a replacement come in) , he's never really been totally happy, doesn't like the other players and has only once played more than 40 games in a season for Arsenal.

I seem to recall reading that Flamini was offered what he wanted?

Here we go. He wasn't offered the deal he wanted at the start of the season as Wenger wanted him to prove himself worthy of the contract. He was then offered the deal but had numerous other teams interested because of the successful season he had.
