ac3 codec for quicktime osx

Hi,
I have a hi-def avi file which plays in quicktime but it does not play the audio. When i open it with divx the audio plays but the video plays very slowly. i think the audio codec it requires is AC3, i downloaded this and put it into the quicktime folder in library but quicktime still doesnt play the audio.
Can anyone help?

I've tried all sorts of QT plugin' I can find online for plaing HD/DiVX/xViD .avi what have you and gave up - they're all can't play AC3 sounds.

Try VLC, that's the player I use for such files. It's useful for me - it plays anything I've thrown at it.

You can also try niceplayer with its plugins and that should play it fine

Mplayer and vlc as suggested above should also do the trick.

thanks a lot guys for the replies. Used the link above, installed and it works fine now.

How comes HD video files play so smoothly in QT but other players such as VLC struggle?

Probably because Quicktime uses CoreVideo - ie. your graphics card is helping to do that HD-Thang
