I have a movie file in which the audio is in FLAC format. My macbook is linked to my HDTV and 5.1 surround sound system via digital signal.
I use VLC to play this movie file and its plays the video fine and the sound does play, however due to the amp not being able to decode FLAC I think sound was reduced to stereo. Usually the amp would show Dolby D or DTS if the input it received were either one of those, but however nothing showed which is an indication that the audio input is just stereo.
I have read that in windows you can use AC3filter to decode FLAC to either dolby digital or DTS to work with a 5.1 surround sound system. Is there anything like this for mac?
Any help would be appreciated.

Michael.

sorry to jump in - is they are all in one codec pack for the apple like on windows I fount one which someone made, but it seems out dated now.

As I too have a clip that works fine in VLC but in quicktime/front row theres no sound...

Thanks

I usually install;

VLC (General all round files)
Perian.component (handles Xvid and other rare formats)
Flip4Mac (handles WMV files)

There are a few codec packs, but as you mention they're old and I find the 3 listed above can handle just about any file you throw at it.

I seem to have them already...

The codec I have installed are;

A52Codec.compoment
AC3 Codec.compoment
AC3movieimport.compoment
AppleIntermediatecodec.compoment
aviimporter-r7(intel).compoment
DivX 6 decoder.compoment
DivX Decoder.compoment
DivX Encoder.compoment
Flip4Mac WMV Export.compoment
Flip4Mac WMV import.compoment
Perian.component
Xvid_codec-r58(intel).component

Am I missing any that I may needed?

using g-spot on the pc it says the file uses divx (same as wma) as the sound stream...

I don't think that codecs are my problem, there isn't a problem playing the movie file or sound, the problem is that the output via optical out cannot be decoded by my amp (only DD 5.1 and DTS, not FLAC), for windows they get around this by use AC3filter to convert FLAC to 5.1/dts on the fly, therefore they get a surround sound output. Just wondering if there is anything like this for mac?
The codecs i have are flip4mac, divx, vlc.

I realise the problem.. hence why I recommended the converter.

I don't think there's an app for OS X that will do it on-the-fly :( Sadly.

FLAC should be sent to the digital out as PCM. Works fine on my HTPC (granted not a Mac) Don't have AC-3 filter installed. Flac and AC-3/DTS audio works fine into my AV pre-amp.

I use Winamp for music, WMP for video (FFDSHOW) AC-3 and DTS in ffdshow audio codecs set to SPDIF.

for windows they get around this by use AC3filter to convert FLAC to 5.1/dts on the fly,

Nooooo! Don't do that.
